TYLER, TEXAS – Genesis Armendariz and
Kaylee Davis both tossed completes games in their respective starts to lead #8 UT Tyler to 5-3 and 6-1 victories over #22 Angelo State on Saturday afternoon.
Both Patriot starting pitchers worked well with runners aboard all afternoon, stranding a total of 16 runners between the two games, lifting the Patriots to their 35
th and 36
th straight victories on their home field. Junior
Sam Schott led the UT Tyler offense on the afternoon with four hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 performance in the game two victory that featured two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
UT Tyler moves to 12-5 on the year and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play with the victories.
Game 1
Freshman
Makayla Garcia drove in the final three runs and Armendariz stranded at least one runner aboard in every inning of the 5-3 game one victory.
Garcia plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single and then plated what would end up being the winning runs in the sixth on a two-RBI triple off the centerfield fence. Armendariz went the complete seven innings and surrendered just three earned runs despite conceding nine hits and six walks to the Rambelles.
The UT Tyler defensive effort was outstanding all game, turning three double plays in the ball game, two of which ended an inning. The defensive tone was set early by the Patriots as they worked a double play to end a first inning in which the first two runners of the ball game got aboard.
UT Tyler put the offense into motion in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI singles from
Courtney Plocheck and
Cassidi Mullen that plated the first two runs of the day. Angelo State, who left runners aboard again in the second and third, finally got to Armendariz with a solo homer and a fielder's choice that scored a run to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
Garcia's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fourth quickly put the lead back into the hands of the Patriots at 3-2. Armendariz worked around a walk in the fifth and then got out of her biggest jam in the top of the sixth.
Angelo State loaded the bases with no outs, but a key pick-off play from catcher
Audrey Escamilla to third baseman
Michelle Arias to get the lead runner and an ensuing double play turned by Arias put an end to the Rambelle threat with no damage done. Schott led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and then came around to score alongside pinch runner
Angelique Rangel on the bases clearing triple from Garcia.
A two-out triple was cashed in for Angelo State on an RBI single in the top of the seventh to bring the score to it's 5-3 final. The Rambelles fittingly brought the tying run to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third, but stranded their ninth runner aboard on a game ending groundout to the shortstop.
UT Tyler on the otherhand was very efficient in moving runners, leaving just two Patriots aboard in the game. Garcia finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
The Patriots totaled six hits and drew three walks.
Game 2
Junior
Kaylee Davis stood strong in the circle after falling behind early in game two in order to register the second complete game of the day for the Patriots in the 6-1 victory.
Angelo State scored their first and only run of the game in the top of the second to briefly hold the lead before UT Tyler closed the books on the day with six unanswered runs. Schott scored Garcia for the tying run in the bottom of the third on a triple to center and then crossed home plate on a fielding error by the Rambelles.
Arias maximized that costly mistake by Angelo State with a double down the rightfield line that scored the third run of the frame to make it 3-1.
Centerfielder
JT Smith made an impactful defensive effort in the top of the fourth to effectively save a run for the Patriots. Smith crashed into the centerfield fence, but got a glove on the ball despite making the catch to allow the leftfielder Schott to range over and quickly field the ball, hit the cutoff, and throw the advancing runner out at the plate.
Without that effort from Smith, the lead would have been cut to just 3-2 after the UT Tyler rally in the third.
Smith hit a sac fly in the fifth to score Schott for the second time in the game to make it 4-1, before another costly fielding mistake helped extend the lead out to 6-1 in the sixth. Garcia popped up to the shortstop for the second out of the inning, but a botched throw to the pitcher by the Rambelles allowed catcher
Taryn Barney to score from third as the ball got away from the Angelo State pitcher.
Schott then hit an infield single to once again maximize the error for the Patriots to notch her third hit of the game and bring the game to it's 6-1 final.
Davis struckout four batters and moved to 3-0 on the season with the complete game effort in the circle. The Venus, Texas native allowed just a single run off five hits.
UT Tyler notched seven hits in the game, three off the bat of Schott and then four additional hits from four different Patriots.
