TYLER, TEXAS – #8 UT Tyler closed out a series sweep of #22 Angelo State on Sunday afternoon by way of an 8-1 victory.
The Patriots leaned on a three-hit complete game effort from
Kaylee Davis in the circle and a productive day from the top of the batting order. Graduate student
Courtney Plocheck and freshman
Makayla Garcia combined to go 5-for-8 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI in the no. 1 and no. 2 spots of the Patriot lineup.
Garcia finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and a pair of RBI, while Plocheck went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the leadoff spot.
The Patriots totaled nine hits in the game, including four of which that went for extra bases. UT Tyler made Angelo State pay for the four Rambelle fielding errors in the contest, scoring five unearned runs in the ball game.
The work from Davis in the circle was largely the headline for the Patriots, closing out a stout pitching display for the Patriot pitching staff in the series, as the junior allowed just three hits and didn't walk a single batter. That performance was particularly impressive given strong winds throughout the afternoon blowing straight out from home plate for the majority of the ball game.
Plocheck led off the ball game for the UT Tyler offense and scored on a sac fly from junior
Sam Schott in the bottom of the first inning to provide Davis a 1-0 lead. Davis retired the next six batters that she faced in the second and third innings and then watched as UT Tyler plated three runs in the bottom of the third.
A pair of singles from second baseman
Nicole Price and Plocheck sandwiched between a pair of outs made a mistake by the Rambelles costly as both runners came around to score on a fielding error and then subsequent throwing error by the Ram catcher.
A third error in the inning on the ensuing at bat for UT Tyler plated the third and final run of the frame to draw out the UT Tyler lead to 4-0. The Patriots earned their fifth unanswered run in their next trip to the plate on a sac fly from pinch hitter
Madison Okano that scored junior
JT Smith from third.
A solo homer in the top of the fifth provide Angelo State with their only run of the game. The Rambelles hadn't advanced a runner into scoring position up to that point in the game and put their only runner on second or third base in the top of the seventh with a two-out double.
A Schott double in the fifth scored Garcia to make it 6-1 and a two-RBI Garcia single in the sixth inning drew the score out to it's eventual 8-1 final. Davis worked around the aforementioned double in the top of the seventh to put a stamp on the UT Tyler pitching effort over the weekend.
The Patriots outscored a Rambelles team that entered the weekend 15-1 and ranked no. 22 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll by a 19-to-5 total. UT Tyler extended it's Division II-best 37
th straight home victory in the process.
UT Tyler will remain home for a Tuesday and Wednesday series at Irwin Field against UT Permian Basin. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
