Patriots Men Sweep Doubleheader, Patriots Women Split

After a long day of tennis, the Patriots took home three convincing victories in four total matches on Thursday.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ORLANDO, FLORIDA – UT Tyler tennis completed the first day of two days of neutral site matches in Florida in strong fashion as the men's program took down both Augustana and P.R.-Rio Piedras, and the women dropped their match to Augustana but put together a convincing win over Shippensburg.

On the men's side of the day, they began against Augustana on Thursday morning. They looked dominant early, as Daniil Felker and Egor Shestakov paired up for a 6-3 win in doubles, and Joaquin Bianchi and Carel Wessel paired up for a 6-0 win as they took the doubles point in just 31 minutes.

Over in singles, the Patriots landslide continued, as Jordi Garcia Portell bookmarked a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets win to move the Patriots to 2-0. Just minutes later, Shestakov dropped in a 6-3, 6-1 win to put the Patriots at match point.

From there, Wessel scored a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win, Yudai Watanabe picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win, and then Felker added on a 6-0, 7-6 win to give the Patriots a commanding 6-0 lead.

The final match of the day was Bianchi in #1 singles, and he followed the entire team with his own straight sets win, this one by scores of 6-2, 6-3 to give the Patriots a 7-0 win.

Against P.R.-Rio Piedras, the Patriots continued their dominant efforts with another sweep.

In doubles, Mohamed Forkane Lebdi and Job Japelj paired up for a 6-0 win, and Watanabe and Ryohei Miyake followed suit with their own 6-0 win to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead heading into doubles.

The Gallitos unfortunately only had five players, so the Patriots played five matches across the board in singles instead of the normal six. In line #1, Felker put together a 6-2, 6-2 win, and he was followed by Lebdi who scored a straight sets win by the same scores.

Watanabe in line #3 picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win of his own, and Japelj followed suit, also with the exact same set scores. The final match of the day featured Miyake, and he carried on the Patriots momentum with a 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win to finish off the 6-0 win.

On the women's side of Thursday's action, the Patriots women began with a matchup against Augustana. The Vikings found their rhythm in doubles early, putting together wins of 6-1 and 6-0 in the #2 and #3 lines to go up 1-0 in the match.

Over in singles, the Vikings picked up a quick win in the #2 line, as Allison Schwartz was unfortunately forced to retire in her match.

The Vikings again kept it rolling, picking up straight set wins in both the #3, #4, and #6 lines, ultimately picking up the points necessary to secure their win.

In the #5 line, Elisa Buhagiar put together a spirited effort, as she took a 6-4 win in set one before falling 7-5 in set two to force a third set tiebreaker. However, in that tiebreaker, the Vikings would have the upper hand and earn their sixth point.

The lone Patriots win came in line #1, as Muskan Gupta delivered a dramatic comeback win in scores of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) to put the Patriots on the board in a final score of 6-1.

In the second match of the day for the Patriots women, the tide flipped completely as they rolled over Shippensburg in a 7-0 sweep.

The match started quickly with two 6-0 doubles wins by the pairs of Gupta / Yelena Kim and Kanika Sivaraman / Schwartz to secure the doubles point for the Pariots.

Over in singles, it was near perfection, as the Patriots dropped just three total games. The Raiders also unfortunately had five players, but the Patriots picked up a walkover win in line #6.

Gupta and Sivaraman quickly dispatched their opponents with 6-0, 6-0 wins in line #1 and #2. In line #3, Kim picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win and was quickly followed by Anna Melnik who delivered a 6-0, 6-1 win.

In the final match of the day, Buhagiar kept up the Patriots efforts with a 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win to wrap up a 7-0 affair.

Next up for UT Tyler will be matches with St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, as both teams are set to compete at 10 a.m. central time in Orlando, Florida.
