Patriots Tennis Picks Up Sweep over Western New Mexico

Both Patriots tennis programs looked dominant on Friday to start 1-0 in LSC play in the Land of Enchantment

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, NEW MEXICO – UT Tyler tennis got their LSC slate started on Friday against Western New Mexico and both teams picked up dominant wins as they each start 1-0.
 
The Patriots women competed first, starting their match in doubles against the Mustangs. Yelena Kim and Muskan Gupta paired up in line #1, and put the Patriots in front with a 6-2 win. Following them was the pair of Anna Melnik and Kanika Sivaraman, who picked up a 6-4 win to ensure the Patriots took a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
 
In those singles matches, the Patriots got their second point of the match in line #6, as Elisa Buhagiar won in a walkover due to Western New Mexico being unable to field a sixth player.
 
That 2-0 lead quickly grew to 3-0, as Gupta delivered a big 6-1, 6-3 straight sets win in line #1. Just minutes later, Melnik followed suit, putting together a dominant second set to win 6-4, 6-1 and give the Patriots their fourth point of the day.
 
Luisa Moraes also won in straight sets, taking a 7-6, 6-1 decision in her favor to make it 5-0. She was followed by Kim in line #3, who after taking a 6-1 win in set one fell 3-6 in set two before winning the tiebreaker in set three to emerge victorious.
 
The final match of the day was line #2, as Sivaraman claimed the fourth straight sets win of the match in 7-5, 6-3 fashion to ensure the Patriots sweep.
 
On the men's side of the match, they began doubles action with a walkover win as the Mustangs could not field a third doubles team. Joaquin Bianchi and Carel Wessel paired up in line #2 as they completed a 6-3 win to ensure the doubles point would go UT Tyler's way. Egor Shestakov and Daniil Felker would also pick up a win in line #1, as they claimed a 7-6 win in a tiebreaker.
 
Over in singles, the Patriots picked up a win in line #6 as the Mustangs couldn't field a player, with Job Jabelj winning in a walkover to make it 2-0.
 
Next on the court was Jordi Garcia Portell, who in line #4 put. Together a dominant second set to claim a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets win to make it 3-0.
 
The game winning point came from Shestakov, who took over in line #1 to the tune of a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win to make it 4-0 in favor of the Patriots.
 
Also picking up wins on the day were Wessel and Yudai Watanabe, as the pair tacked on to the straight sets wins with a 6-2, 7-5 win for Wessel and a 6-4, 6-3 win for Watanabe as the Patriots wrapped up their six points.
 
The Mustangs took just one match on the day, a straight sets win in line #2 to make the final score 6-1.
 
Both programs will now head out for Odessa, Texas, where they will take on UT Permian Basin in their next LSC match. Those matches are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday morning.
