#5 UT Tyler Finds Both Sides of Low Scoring Affairs Against Eastern New Mexico

TYLER, TEXAS - #5 UT Tyler came out on both ends of a pair of low-scoring ballgames against Eastern New Mexico with a 2-0 win and a 3-2 loss.

Kaylee Davis and Christin Haygood combined to shutout the Greyhounds in game one and the UT Tyler offense did enough to come out ahead with RBI from Courtney Plocheck and Sam Schott. UT Tyler opened a 2-0 lead in the first three innings of game two, but three unanswered runs by Eastern New Mexico allowed the Greyhounds to even the series at 1-1.

Haygood picked up the save in game one after coming on in relief of Davis and didn't allow an earned run in her second relief of the appearance to notch a ninth straight outing without conceding a run.

Game One

Davis scattered five hits over 5.2 innings of work and then turned the ball over to Haygood for the final out of the sixth inning to win a pitching duel in game one against Eastern New Mexico.

The UT Tyler offense plated runs in the third inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Plocheck and a solo homer in the sixth inning by Schott to provide the difference in the ball game. Davis worked around a pair of baserunners in the first inning and then gave way to Haygood in her only other jam of the game in the sixth inning.

Haygood got a groundout in that sixth inning with runners on second and third to keep Eastern New Mexico off the board and UT Tyler ahead 1-0. Schott hit a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to provide an insurance run and a 2-0 lead for the Patriots.

Haygood retired the Greyhounds in order in the top of the seventh to close the books on her first save of the season. Haygood retired all four batters she faced, striking out two, while Davis struckout five Greyhounds and scattered five hits.

Both teams notched five hits a piece. Schott provided the only extra-base hit for UT Tyler with the solo homer. Plocheck notched an RBI.

Game Two

UT Tyler had three of their four hits in the first three innings of play before Eastern New Mexico rattled off a trio of unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win 3-2.

Junior JT Smith put both Patriot runs on the board with an RBI double in the first and a sac fly in the third inning. Starter Genesis Armendariz allowed just one base runner through the first two innings, and then worked around a pair of two-out singles by the Greyhounds in the top of the third.

Eastern New Mexico started the comeback with a solo homer in the top of the fourth and then took the advantage after a pair of doubles in the fifth. Haygood came on for her second relief appearance of the day in that fifth inning following a leadoff double and walk for the Greyhounds.

Haygood struckout the next two batters she faced, but conceded the second double of the inning to plate the two runs for Eastern New Mexico. UT Tyler moved a runner over to third in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't manage the tying run.

The Patriots were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

All four UT Tyler hits came from different batters. Smith finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI. Plocheck, Cassidi Mullen and Nicole Price added the other hits.

Armendariz went 4.0 innings and suffered the loss after conceding three earned runs. Haygood struckout four and scattered two hits.
