Box Score 2 ODESSA, TEXAS – UT Tyler tennis dropped their first Lone Star Conference matches of the season as UT Permian Basin took the men's match by a score of 4-3 and the women's match by a score of 5-2.
The women's match got rolling first, beginning as always in doubles. The Patriots got rolling early, as both the #1 and #2 lines came away with quick wins to ensure the Patriots took the doubles point.
Muskan Gupta and
Yelena Kim in the #1 line won 6-2, and
Allison Schwartz and
Kanika Sivaraman won 6-2.
However in singles, the Falcons bounced back, taking straight sets wins in both the #4 line and the #6 line to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the #5 line,
Elisa Buhagiar battled close in the first set, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-2 as the Falcons took a 3-1 lead.
The match came down to the #2 line, where
Allison Schwartz battled to a dramatic 7-5 first set, but the Falcons picked up a 6-2 second set win to claim their fourth point of the match and ensure the victory.
In the #3 line, Sivaraman would battle back from a 7-6 first set loss to answer with a 6-2 second set win to force a tiebreaker. In that tiebreaker, the Falcons pulled away, taking the #3 line and a 5-1 lead.
The final match of the day to finish was the #1 line, where
Muskan Gupta put up the second Patriots point of the day with a 7-6, 7-6 straight sets win to make the final score 5-2.
Over on the men's side of the match, they also got off to a hot start as they took the #1 and #2 doubles lines to ensure a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Daniil Felker and
Egor Shestakov combined for a 6-4 win in line #1, while
Joaquin Bianchi and
Carel Wessel followed suit with a 7-5 victory.
Over in singles, the Patriots took the opening match, as
Jordi Garcia Portell put together a 6-2, 6-4 straight sets win to put the Patriots up 2-0. Wessel joined him in line #4, as he won his match in scores of 7-5, 6-3 to put the Patriots up 3-0.
The #34 ranked Falcons fought back, taking a straight sets win in line #6 to get on the board. Then, in line #2, the Falcons took a dramatic 6-4, 7-6 (12-10) win to make it 3-2 in the Patriots favor.
In line #1, Bianchi dropped his first set 4-6, but battled back with a 6-3 win to even the match. That forced a third set, but the Falcons took a 6-1 win to even the match up at 3-3 overall.
That left the entirety of the match up to the #3 singles line, where Felker battled it out. He took the opening set 6-4, but the Falcons battled back with a 3-6 win. In the deciding third set, the Falcons took a 5-7 win to complete the dramatic comeback and hand the Patriots their first LSC loss.
Both teams will now reset for just one match this next week, as both teams take on St. Mary's on the road on Friday morning. That match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
