Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – UT Tyler tennis split action with Nebraska-Kearney in a pair of neutral site matches in Wichita Falls on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots women were on the courts first, taking on the #26 ranked Lopers.
The match started off in doubles, where the Lopers took the early 1-0 lead behind strong play in the #2 and #3 lines. There, they took wins of 6-2 and 6-4 to ensure the point. In line #1,
Muskan Gupta and
Allison Schwartz paired together for a 6-4 win.
Over in singles, the Lopers tacked on another point as they took the #4 singles line by scores of 6-0, 6-1. However, the Patriots battled back, as Gupta and Schwartz each continued their doubles success over into singles.
Gupta picked up a win in the #1 line in scores of 6-2, 6-1, while Schwartz followed suit with wins of 6-3, 6-3 in the #2 line.
The Lopers answered back with a win in #6 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2, moving them to match point on the afternoon.
The Patriots would not go away, as
Elisa Buhagiar took a dramatic three set win to extend the match. She split her first two sets at 6-1, 3-6, and then rattled off a big 7-5 third set win to force the match down to the #3 singles line.
In that line,
Kanika Sivaraman battled tightly, but a 6-4, 6-1 win from the Lopers gave them the final point necessary for a 4-3 win.
Over in the men's match, the #12 ranked Patriots faced off with #40 Nebraska-Kearney. In doubles, the Patriots wasted no time in getting things rolling as they claimed the doubles point to move ahead 1-0 going into singles.
In those doubles matches, the pairs of
Jordi Garcia Portell / Forkane Lebdi and
Joaquin Bianchi /
Carel Wessel took wins of 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
Over in singles, it was a Patriots avalanche, as they took five of the six matches on their way to a 6-1 win.
Daniil Felker led off with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the #3 line, and he was quickly followed by
Yudai Watanabe in line #6. Watanabe rolled in his match by scores of 6-2, 6-1, putting the Patriots on match point.
Egor Shestakov and
Carel Wessel finished at nearly the same time as each raced to claim the match point. Shestakov posted scores of 6-1, 6-2 in the #2 line, while Wessel finished off his opponent with scores of 7-5, 6-2 in the #5 line to give the Patriots a 5-0 lead as they continued to put together a strong showing.
The final win of the day came from the #1 line, as
Joaquin Bianchi delivered a 6-2, 6-4 win in straight sets to give the Patriots their sixth and final point.
The Lopers lone point came in line #4, as they took down Forkane Lebdi in a three set thriller by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) to post a final score of 6-1 in the Patriots favor.
The Patriots will return to action on Sunday, as they each face off another pair of ranked opponents in Washburn as their men are ranked #13 and their women are ranked #5.
