Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – Both UT Tyler tennis squads fell to ranked Midwestern State teams on Saturday afternoon in Wichita Falls.
The men's squad lost to #18 Midwestern State by a 5-2 final, while the women's side lost to #4 Midwestern State by a 6-1 final tally. The UT Tyler men's team drops to 15-5 on the year and 5-2 in Lone Star Conference play and the women's side to 5-15 on the year and 2-5 in Lone Star Conference play.
In the men's match, Midwestern State took the doubles point with wins in all three matches.
Carel Wessel and
Egor Shestakov secured singles victories in the #2 and #4 lines. Wessel won 7-5 in the opening set and 7-6 in the second set to put the first point on the board for the Patriots.
Shestakov battled all the way back after a 6-2 opening set loss to give UT Tyler a second point after Midwestern State had already claimed victory in the match. Shestakov forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second set and then claimed a 7-6 victory in the deciding set to conclude the match at it's 5-2 final.
The doubles pair of
Muskan Gupta and
Yelena Kim won their doubles match to avoid the 3-0 sweep against the Mustangs, winning 6-4 over the no. 27 nationally-ranked doubles squad of Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga for Midwestern State.
Luisa Moraes won the #6 line after Midwestern State opened up a 4-0 lead in the match against the Patriots.
Elisa Buhagiar extended her match to three sets with a 6-4 win the second frame after an opening 6-1 loss, but conceded the final set to give Midwestern another point on the board.
Moraes won her matches by 7-5 and 6-1 final tallies.
Muskan Gupta also played to a deciding third set against Midwestern State's Jessica Binzari in a battle of nationally-ranked singles competitors. Gupta won 6-4 in the opening frame, dropped a 6-3 decision in the second set and then fell 1-0 in the last set as the final battle of the match.
Both teams will be back in action on April 16
th at DBU.
