Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's tennis hit all the right notes on Saturday as they took down #1 seed Midwestern State to claim their second ever Lone Star Conference Tournament title.
The Patriots have continued their championship ways, as they have won either the LSC Regular Season or LSC Tournament title in each of their first four years of LSC competition.
The day started with another dramatic battle in doubles, as Midwestern State took the #3 line to get the early advantage. The Patriots responded in the #2 line, as
Joaquin Bianchi and
Carel Wessel combined for a 6-2 win to even the doubles matches.
That left the doubles point down to the #1 line, where the pair of
Egor Shestakov and
Daniil Felker have led the Patriots all season long. They went right back to work yet again, claiming a huge 7-6 (11-9) win to move themselves into singles with a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs struck back in the first singles match, as they took a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win in line #3, and then tacked on a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win in line #6 to take the lead.
UT Tyler remained unphased, as
Jordi Garcia Portell put the Patriots on the board in singles with a dramatic three set win in scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Mustangs would add another win in line #2 in straight sets over
Egor Shestakov, but
Joaquin Bianchi stemmed the tide for the Patriots as he closed out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win in line #1 to ensure the match would come down to the final line.
In that final line stood
Daniil Felker, who has been no stranger to dramatic wins over the course of the tournament. In the first set, he took a 7-6 (7-3) win in a tiebreaker, before the Mustangs answered with a 7-6 (8-6) win of their own to force a third set.
In that third set, Felker got out in front early and held a big lead at 5-2 before the Mustangs held serve to make it 5-3. Felker however delivered in the clutch moment one more time, taking the final game and a 6-3 win in the final set to give UT Tyler the win.
Felker for his efforts throughout the weekend was named Lone Star Conference Tournament MVP, and he was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates
Jordi Garcia Portell,
Joaquin Bianchi, and
Egor Shestakov.
UT Tyler has now earned the Lone Star Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament, and they will have to wait to find out who they will square off with.
