Four Run 10th Secures Game One Win for Patriots

After UT Permian Basin tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, the Patriots battled back with four big runs in the top half of the 10th inning to put away the Falcons and take game one.

ODESSA, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball took a dramatic game one win over UT Permian Basin on Friday afternoon behind four extra inning runs to move ahead 1-0 in the best of three series.

UT Tyler jumped out to the early lead in the contest, as Nathan Carriere led off with a single to extend his UT Tyler record hitting streak out to 30. He would come around to score three batters later as Blake LaBuda drilled a double to plate Carriere and make it 1-0.

They added another run in the third, as Lane Hutchinson came around to score on a wild pitch after moving bases due to a fielder's choice and throwing error to make it 2-0.

The Patriots turned to ace Rawley Hector to get the job done on the mound, and he worked a clean first five innings. He allowed just three hits through the first six innings, all of which were singles. Of those hitters, only one reached second base as they stole second in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Hector induced a fielder's choice to end the inning and keep the Falcons off the board.

In the seventh, the Falcons finally found their way on the board with a pair of runs to tie up the contest. A walk and a single led off the inning, and that brought on Garrett Arredondo in replacement of Hector.

The next batter dropped in a bunt single, and that was followed up by two straight sacrifice flies to plate a pair of runs before Arredondo closed the inning with one final flyout to keep the damage to just two runs.

Neither side scored in the eighth, and UT Tyler would get the scoring started in the ninth as Connor Clark singled with two outs before Drew Schmidt doubled deep down the left field line to make it 3-2.

In the home half, a pair of one out doubles tied the game quickly for the Falcons before Nick Niebur stepped on to the mound. He struck out his first batter before intentionally walking his second to set up a force out at first, second, or third. He followed that up with a ground ball fielder's choice out at second to end the inning and force extra innings.

In the 10th, the Patriots finally got their big inning, as Hutchinson led off with a double before moving to third on an Ethan Bedgood single. Next at the plate was LaBuda, who broke it open with an RBI single to put the Patriots in front. Two walks, a hit by pitch, and another RBI single from Clark plated three more runs, giving the Patriots a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 10th.

A leadoff double started the inning for the Falcons, but Niebur shut the door with a lineout and a pair of groundouts to end the inning and the contest for the Patriots.

Rawley Hector went six full innings while allowing just two runs off of four hits while striking out a pair. Garrett Arredondo went 2.1 innings while allowing just one run off of five hits.

Nick Niebur picked up the win after going 1.2 innings while allowing no runs on one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

Blake LaBuda, Connor Clark, and Drew Schmidt each collected two hits, while Schmidt had a pair of doubles and LaBuda had two RBI.

UT Tyler will now look to close out the best of three series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
