Late Inning Charge from Falcons Forces Game Three

The Patriots scored in each of the first eight innings on Saturday, but an eight run seventh and a four run eighth proved to be the difference for UT Permian Basin as they evened the series.

ODESSA, TEXAS – UT Tyler and UT Permian Basin will play a deciding third game in their best of three series on Sunday after the Falcons rallied to take game two on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots offense struck first again, as Nathan Carriere came around to score on a double play after he led off the game with a double. The Falcons would strike back with a sacrifice fly in the home half, but the Patriots found their stride with five runs over the next two and a half innings.

Kaston Mason barreled up a pitch that went deep over the right field wall for a solo shot in the second, and Ethan Bedgood tripled home Carriere in the third. Kyle Atkinson jumped on the home run train in the fourth, as he added his own solo shot. Drew Schmidt added an RBI single and Nathan Carriere drove home another with his second double to make it 5-1 in the Patriots favor.

The Falcons added two in the home half of the inning, and Austin Ochoa helped the Patriots cause with his own solo homer in the fifth to keep the Patriots up 7-3.

However, the Falcons kept at it, plating three more runs in the fifth behind three singles, a groundout, and a double to cut the lead down to just one run.

Another solo home run came the Patriots way in the sixth, as Drew Schmidt pulled one down the line to make it 8-6 before the Falcons again found a run thanks to a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to one after six innings.

Ochoa drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Mason drove in another with a groundout to put the Patriots up 10-7 through their half of the seventh.

In the home half however, the Falcons broke through for a big inning. Three singles drove in a run around a flyout, and then a fielder's choice combined with a throwing error allowed two runs to come home and tie the game.

The next batter tripled to plate another run, before a wild pitch and a single made it 13-10. One last double brought home two more runs as the Falcons took a 15-10 lead heading to the eighth inning.

Nathan Carriere homered to lead off the top half of the inning, but that would be all the Patriots scored. In the home half, the Patriots got a groundout before a lightning delay forced a 30 minute wait. When action returned, the Falcons added four more runs off of a double and a home run to make it 19-11.

The Patriots would not be able to cut into the lead in the ninth and went down in order to finish the game.

Nathan Carriere led the Patriots with a 4-for-5 effort that included two RBI and three runs. Ochoa, Mason, and Schmidt each added in two RBI, while Kyle Atkinson, Ochoa, and Schmidt each collected two hits.

UT Tyler will look to complete the series win on Sunday afternoon as they face off with the Falcons at 1 p.m.
