LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – UT Tyler men's basketball saw their three game win streak snapped at the hands of Cameron on Sunday after an 84-71 defeat on the road.
Dontrell Hewlett had a game-high 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting while
Mareng Gatkuoth added in 14 points with four three pointers.
The Patriots began the first half on a 14-7 run thanks to 6-for-8 shooting and a pair of three pointers from
Mareng Gatkuoth. The two teams would go shot for shot over the next several minutes as the Patriots continued their hot shooting and held the Aggies out at arms reach with 9:01 remaining in the half.
The game remained close in the final minutes of the first half, with the Patriots lead never growing larger than six. In the last two minutes however, the Aggies closed out on a 9-2 run to steal a one point lead at the halftime break. In the first half, the Patriots shot a blistering 60% from the floor and 57% from beyond the arc as they held the Aggies to just 28% from the three point line.
It would be a slow start to the second half, with the first bucket from either side coming at the 17:46 mark of the period. Cameron would get rolling on a 12-4 run that gave them a nine point advantage with 15:10 remaining in the contest.
Hudson Anderson would drop in a layup to begin an 8-6 run for the Patriots, but they could only close the lead to seven points as the Aggies kept pace due to strong free throw shooting.
Jadin Penigar and
Dontrell Hewlett would combine for seven points and help cut the lead down to six points at two separate points over the next few minutes of the contest, but that would be as close as the Patriots could get in the final moments as the Aggies were able to convert from the free throw line and from the field to ice the contest and hand the Patriots the loss.
UT Tyler now stands at 6-7 on the season and 3-4 in LSC play. They now return home to the Herrington Patriot Center where they will face St. Edward's on January 9
