DALLAS, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer will begin their LSC slate at 0-1 after a narrow 2-1 defeat to DBU on Wednesday night.
DBU recorded a first half goal to take the lead into the break, but the Patriots battled back and got a key goal from
Jason Verhoogen to draw level. However, DBU had the answer and scored just under eight minutes later to take the lead and hold on for the win.
Both sides would get off to a slow start, with DBU recording the only shot over the first 18 minutes of action that, with that shot being saved by keeper
Niclas Becker.
The two teams continued their offensive stalemate throughout the half, as neither side would put another shot on net until the 44
th minute of play. That is when DBU found their best chance of the first half. A cross was swung in from the right side of the box, and it landed right at the feet of a DBU attacker, who was able to slip it just by an outstretched Becker.
UT Tyler would put one shot on net by
Jason Verhoogen immediately following the goal, but it would be saved by DBU's keeper as the two teams headed into halftime at 1-0.
The two teams each recorded a shot on goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half, but both keepers held their lines and came up with the saves to keep the match at 1-0.
UT Tyler would break through with the huge answer in the 71
st minute, leveling the score at one. A yellow card would see a free kick for the Patriots, and
Jaxson Stovall lofted the ball towards the back post, where
Tony Ngombi then lifted it back towards the middle, where a wide open
Jason Verhoogen tapped in the goal and made it 1-1.
Just under eight minutes later, DBU would strike again as they played the ball left after reversing the field, finding an open man who slipped his shot just inside the right post and gave them the lead yet again.
UT Tyler would put the pressure on in the final moments, with
Oscar Sosa putting a shot on goal and three other Patriots recording shots, but the equalizer wouldn't be found, and DBU would take a 2-1 win.
DBU held a narrow 10-9 shots advantage on the night, but the two teams each posted five shots on goal.
Jason Verhoogen recorded his first goal of his UT Tyler career, adding to his one assist from the first game of the season.
