TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer came up just short to West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon after the Buffs scored with just six minutes to play to take a 2-1 lead.
The Buffs held the total shots advantage at 12-8, but the Patriots held the lead at 5-4 in shots on goal in a game that was nearly level throughout.
The two teams combined for three shots over the first 12 minutes, but neither side would put one on net until the 36
th minute. The Buffs took a deep shot that rose up to the top of the net, and goalkeeper
Luke Ryan was able to make the strong save.
Just under two minutes later, the Patriots would have their first big chance after a West Texas A&M foul inside the box.
Oscar Sosa would step to the spot and drive one to his left, but the Buffs keeper made a diving stop and kept it level at 0-0.
Danny DeMarais took his own shot on goal just over a minute later, and the Buffs added another shot that rebounded off the crossbar to stay scoreless at the half.
Just eight minutes after the break, the Patriots broke through and
Henrique Caputo struck gold and netted a shot for the lead. The goal came from a set piece after a Buffs foul, and a perfect pass from Jaxson Stoval set up the goal.
The Patriot would keep the pressure on as both
Luan Rangel and Stovall recorded shots on goal just two minutes apart, but the game stayed at 1-0.
The 68
th minute would see the Buffs get back into the contest as they would level the contest from a penalty kick after a Patriots foul just inside the box.
Neither side would record a shot for the next 15 minutes after that tying goal, but the next and final shot of the game would ultimately be the decider as West Texas A&M broke through in the 84
th minute to steal three points and the win.
Five different Patriots recorded a shot on goal, and
Danny DeMarais was the lone Patriots player to record at least two shots.
Jaxson Stovall and
