ALPINE, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer picked up their second point of the LSC slate with a 1-1 draw against Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon in west Texas.
The Patriots held a 15-5 shots advantage and an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal, but it took one late penalty kick goal from
Luan Rangel to even up the contest.
That shots advantage started quickly as both
Oscar Sosa and
Niko Vasileiou put shots on goal in the first six minutes, but each were saved.
Diego Cruz and
Luis Martinez would each take their own shots on goal in the later portion of the first half, but again the Lobos came away with the clutch saves to keep it 0-0 at the halftime break.
Luan Rangel took his first shot on goal in the 50
th minute of action, but again it was saved as the Lobos stayed steady. Just two minutes later, Sul Ross State would take their first shot on goal of the contest but it was saved by
Niclas Becker.
In the 61
st minute, the Lobos would break through, scoring on a tough shot that was looped over a diving Becker to take a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots would press forward again, with
Sid Cleofe and Rangel putting up two more shots on goal as they looked for the equalizer. The breakthrough came in the 84
th minute, as a handball in the box from the Lobos put the Patriots at the spot. There, it was Rangel who stepped up and buried the shot to secure the 1-1 draw.
Rangel's goal is his fourth of the season and leads the team. He took a team-high four shots and was the only Patriots player with more than one.
