Rangel’s Big Night, Coutiño’s Late Goal Push Patriots Past Dustdevils

Luan Rangel scored two goals and then assisted Noe Coutiño’s game winning goal to give the Patriots their first LSC win of the year.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer picked up a critical win in thrilling fashion by a score of 3-2 over Texas A&M International on Wednesday night at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

Luan Rangel put together a spectacular performance, scoring two goals in a match for the second time this season while also dropping in the perfect assist to Noe Coutiño for the game winner with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The scoring kicked off with Luan Rangel as he intercepted a Dustdevils pass in their own box. He took a gather dribble to his left, and then ripped a low shot to find the netting and give the Patriots the early lead.

12 minutes later, Texas A&M International would have their answer. A ball that crossed over the touch line lead to a corner kick, and they played it short. From the short corner, they looped in a lofted cross that ended up crossing all the way in front of goal and bounced into the net, tying the game.

The Patriots continued their offensive pressure, getting a pair of shots on goal from Coutiño but the Dustdevils late push would create another opportunity. After a ball played forward found the feet of a forward, they took a quick shot that was saved by a diving Jaxson Stovall, but the ensuing deflection gave the Dustdevils an open net, and they were able to score to make it 2-1 heading into the halftime break.

Over the first 15 minutes of the second half, neither side would put up a shot, but the Dustdevils broke the streak with a shot on goal but it would be saved by Niclas Becker.

Just a minute later, a breakthrough pass from the Patriots found Javi Gonzalez, but the Dustdevils keeper came out from his line for a rough challenge in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Rangel would step to the spot and hammer home his shot to equalize the contest with just under 30 minutes remaining.

The Dustdevils took a pair of shots on goal over the next 19 minutes, but each would be saved by Becker.

With 11 minutes left, Rangel found the ball on his feet down the left side, and then lofted a perfect pass to the back post that found the head of Noe Coutiño, who got all of his header into the right side of the net to make it 3-2 and secure the game winner.

The win is the first of the LSC slate for the Patriots and keeps them in the running for the LSC Tournament with just three games left.

Rangel now has six goals on the season and picked up his first assist of the year in the win. Coutiño scored his third goal of the year and his second game winner in the big effort.

UT Tyler will be on the road this weekend to take on St. Edward's in Austin, Texas on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
