Trio of Second Half Goals Power Patriots Past Hilltoppers

Luan Rangel scored the first and Carlos Galan added two more in a dominant win over St. Edward’s on Sunday.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer picked up their second straight win in Lone Star Conference play after three second half goals on Sunday against St. Edward's propelled them to a 3-0 win.

Rains in the Austin area would force the game to be moved from Saturday to Sunday, but that did not deter the Patriots offense as Luan Rangel scored the first goal and Carlos Galan added two more exclamation points to cap off a brilliant effort.

The first half saw 14 total shots, seven of which went on goal, but neither team would be able to break through as both sides benefitted from great goalkeeping.

UT Tyler keeper Niclas Becker made a save less than two minutes into the match, and would make another save just over 10 minutes later to keep the zero on the board. The key moment came with just 15 minutes left in the half, where an open shot was kept out of the net by a team save.

The Patriots offense would muster three shots on goal in the first half and one off the woodwork, with three of those coming in the final 10 minutes of play as they ramped up the offensive pressure.

That offensive pressure would finally break through in the 58th minute as Luan Rangel got on the board with his third goal of the week. A turnover on a throw in led to a breakout, and Noe Countiño put a long ball over the top that found Rangel, who delivered a strong finish past the keeper to give the Patriots the lead.

Carlos Galan would tack on to the Patriots lead as he connected on his first career goal just 10 minutes later. A ball played down the right sideline was played to the middle by Jason Verhoogen, and Galan stepped right up and slotted in home for the key insurance goal.

Just over nine minutes later, Galan was back at it, tacking on his second goal of the match and second of his career. Tony Ngombi played down the left side of the box, and a brilliant pass found the feet of Galan, who ripped his shot into the right side of the net, capping off a 3-0 win.

Niclas Becker would record seven saves in the shutout win, his third shutout of the season. Ngombi, Coutiño, and Verhoogen each recorded assists.

The Patriots are now at eight points overall in the LSC standings are firmly in the hunt for an LSC Tournament berth.

UT Tyler will head north to battle it out with Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 7 p.m. for their next contest.
