Patriots Make History with First Division II Postseason Win

Goals from Jones and Wong lead UT Tyler past Angelo State 2-0 as the Patriots advance to face top-seeded DBU in Dallas.

San Angelo, Texas – The UT Tyler Women's Soccer team made history Monday night, earning the program's first-ever postseason win since joining NCAA Division II with a 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded Angelo State in the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals at the ASU Soccer Field.

The fifth-seeded Patriots (11-2-5, 7-2-5 LSC) avenged a 1-0 regular season loss to the Rambelles in San Angelo earlier this year, delivering a composed and efficient performance on both ends of the pitch to secure their 10th shutout of the season.

UT Tyler broke through in the 26th minute thanks to junior forward Katie Wong, who put the Patriots in front with a poised finish. Wong received a free kick sent into the box from midfield, handled it cleanly through traffic, and calmly placed her shot past the Angelo State keeper to make it 1-0.

The Rambelles registered their only shot on goal early in the first half, but Robbi Curry was ready for the save to keep the Patriots ahead. UT Tyler's back line of Gabrielle Wiebe, Ariana Johnson, Samantha White, and Savanna Clark stood tall all evening, maintaining their structure and disrupting every Angelo State attack.

The Patriots doubled their lead early in the second half on a determined play from senior captain Natalie Jones. In the 50th minute, UT Tyler sent a shot on frame that was saved by the Angelo State goalkeeper, but Jones sprinted past the defense to pounce on the rebound and buried it into the bottom left corner to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.

Emily Clark entered at halftime and anchored the defense over the final 45 minutes, helping UT Tyler close out the shutout victory. The Patriots' defensive unit held strong as Angelo State finished with nine total shots, only one of which was on goal. UT Tyler controlled the match offensively, outshooting the Rambelles 14-9 and posting eight shots on target.

The victory represents a major milestone for the UT Tyler program, marking its first postseason appearance and win since transitioning to NCAA Division II and joining the Lone Star Conference. The Patriots' 10 shutouts this season underscore the team's balance, discipline, and resilience that have carried them through a historic campaign.

With the win, UT Tyler advances to the Lone Star Conference Semifinals and will travel to Dallas to take on top-seeded Dallas Baptist on Thursday at 5 p.m. The matchup provides the Patriots with another opportunity to extend their postseason run as they look to continue their pursuit of a conference championship.

Behind goals from Wong and Jones and another commanding defensive effort, UT Tyler earned a statement win on the road — one that not only avenges an earlier loss in San Angelo but also cements the Patriots' place among the conference's rising postseason contenders.
