Second-Half Push Lifts Javelinas Past Patriots in Kingsville

UT Tyler erased a second-half deficit and briefly took the lead, but Texas A&M–Kingsville closed on a late run to hand the Patriots a 69–61 road loss.

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - UT Tyler shot 37.1% from the field and 29.4% from three while holding the Javelinas to just 42.6% shooting overall. However, Texas A&M–Kingsville converted 17 free throws, forced 18 Patriot turnovers, and used a pivotal second-half surge to pull away late in Kingsville.

The Patriots opened the game with pace and confidence, knocking down a pair of early threes from Kyle Morgan and generating strong interior finishes from Sam Phipps and Jacob Bell. UT Tyler built multiple leads across the opening 10 minutes and moved ahead 19–17 after a Spencer Gaze layup. The Patriots continued to control the glass, producing second-chance opportunities and out-rebounding the Javelinas throughout the half.

Kingsville responded with a run of its own, using perimeter shooting and transition offense to swing momentum. Despite the push, UT Tyler stayed within reach, closing the half with timely baskets from Morgan and Bell to trail just 40–36 at the break.

The second half opened with more back-and-forth play before the Javelinas began to assert themselves defensively. A string of turnovers allowed Kingsville to extend its lead to 49–43 by the 16-minute mark. The Patriots continued to dominate the boards, ultimately finishing with a 44–30 rebounding advantage, but Kingsville's defensive pressure forced empty possessions that slowed the UT Tyler attack.

UT Tyler answered with a 7–0 run sparked by a Morgan layup, two free throws from Xavier Williams, and another finish inside to pull within one. A jumper from Gregory Fowlds with nine minutes remaining gave the Patriots their first lead of the half at 52–51, and Morgan pushed the advantage to four with a three-pointer moments later. The Patriots continued to battle and briefly regained the lead at the five-minute mark on a Chris Carpenter layup to make it 59–58.

From there, however, UT Tyler managed just two points the rest of the way, both on free throws from Carpenter, as the Javelinas closed strong on both ends and sealed the game at the stripe.

UT Tyler finished with a +14 edge on the boards and 36 paint points, but Kingsville's defense proved decisive by forcing 18 turnovers and limiting the Patriots' late-game looks.

Kyle Morgan led the Patriots with 20 points and 8 rebounds on 8-for-14 shooting. Jacob Bell added 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Sam Phipps contributed 5 points, 7 rebounds, one block, and one steal.

UT Tyler will look to bounce back as they return home next week to host St. Edward's in Lone Star Conference play.
