Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's and women's tennis each moved to 1-0 on the year after a pair of strong victories at the Summers Tennis Center on Saturday over Mississippi College.
In the women's match, the Patriots took the doubles point after the #1 and #3 lines each took wins.
Allison Schwartz and
Carla Rodier combined in the #1 line for a 6-2 win that took 28 minutes. Just behind them,
Natalia Gorzny and
Paula Castellanos earned a 6-3 win in the third line to ensure the 1-0 lead for the Patriots.
Gorzny's hot run continued in singles, as she earned the second Patriots point after a straight sets 6-2, 6-0 win.
A 2-0 lead for the Patriots quickly turned to 2-2 as Mississippi College took both the #1 singles line and #3 singles line to tie the match back up.
Paula Castellanos and
Yona Bancarel would close up with wins in both the #5 and #2 lines, ensuring the Patriots victory. Castellanos went just two sets, winning 6-4, 6-0. Bancarel would be a bit more dramatic, splitting the first two sets 6-4, 5-7 before responding with a 6-4 win in the third and final set to ensure the Patriots 4-2 win.
On the men's side, the Patriots would also look stout in doubles, taking a pair of quick wins to earn the first point.
Arthur Miquelard and
Job Japelj collected a 6-1 win in line #3 while
Artiom Dorofeev and
Malo Poulesquen earned a 6-4 win in line #2.
Over in singles, the Patriots continued their landslide of points as they rattled off three quick wins via straight sets in the #1, #3, and #4 lines to earn a 4-0 win.
Those wins started with Dorofeev in the #3 line, as he earned his win with sets of 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour.
The last two points came from
Carel Wessel and
Daniil Felker in the #1 and #4 lines. Wessel had to go to a tiebreaker to earn the first set at 7-6 (7-4), but then reeled off a 7-5 win to take the victory. For Felker, he would also go to a tiebreaker in the first set, taking a 7-6 (11-9) win before a 6-4 win in the second set.
The Patriots will now take on Harding on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. before wrapping up their opening weekend at the Summers Tennis Center with a match against Delta State on Monday at 9 a.m.
