Men's Basketball Heads to #10 DBU in Season Finale

The Patriots will look to end their season on a high note as they head to Dallas, Texas, for their last game of the season.

LAST TIME OUT

Last week, the Patriots hit the road to take on UT Permian Basin and Angelo State. Against the Falcons, they kept the game close throughout the first half, but a strong second-half surge by UT Permian Basin proved too much to overcome. Facing the Rams, the Patriots fell behind early as Angelo State built a commanding first-half lead—one they couldn't recover from despite their second half efforts.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS

  • UT Tyler is 8-19 on the season and 5-16 in LSC play.
  • The Patriots have now surpassed their win total from the 2023-24 season. One of those is a win over Regis, which doubles as an in-region victory and a win over the team picked third in the preseason RMAC poll.
  • Head coach Tim Moser is in his second season as head coach of the program. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program.  As a head coach, Moser holds a 521-216 career record and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-33 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
  • The Patriots are putting together a tough defense at the national level thus far this season. They rank 37th nationally in field goal percentage defense, 92nd in three point percentage defense, 67th in scoring defense, and 74th in blocks per game.
  • Individually, Dontrell Hewlett ranks 13th in the LSC in assists per game, and ranks inside the top 10 in points scored in the conference.  Sam Phipps ranks 6th in blocks and 6th in blocks per game and is also 6th in offensive rebounds per game.

DBU NOTES AND TRENDS
  • DBU comes into this week's matchup at a record of 26-4 and 18-3 in LSC play. They are coming off of a win against UT Permian Basin in their most recent contest.
  • The Patriots are averaging 86.0 points per game on 46% shooting from the floor and 34% from beyond the arc. They are holding opponents to 72.7 points per game on 44.8% shooting and 34.7% from beyond the arc.
  • They are led on offense by the duo of Ricky Lujan and Cameron Kahn. Lujan averages 17.4 points per game on 46.5% shooting and 41.6% from beyond the arc. He is also second on the team in assists and steals. Kahn is averaging 14.3 points per game on 54.6% from the floor while being second on the team in rebounds and fourth in both steals and blocks.
  • Dr. Blake Flickner is the head coach of the Patriots and is in the midst of his 19th season, all with DBU. He holds a career record of 367-214 in his time with DBU and has coached the program to the NCAA Tournament eight different times.
