Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler tennis swept DBU on Friday afternoon as they closed out Alumni Weekend at the Summers Tennis Center.
MEN'S MATCH: #8 UT Tyler: 7, DBU: 0
The Patriots men got action going at 10 a.m. on Friday morning, and they wasted no time in cruising to a win over DBU. That match began with a big doubles effort, as both
Daniil Felker and
Job Japelj and
Arthur Miquelard and
Trevor Short combined for 6-2, 6-2 wins to ensure the Patriots a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, the first four matches of the day took less than 40 minutes as the Patriots cruised to a 5-0 lead in the match.
Artiom Dorofeev,
Martin Despodov, Felker, and Japelj would each cruise to straight set wins, with no Patriots opponent reaching four game wins in their match.
Malo Poulesquen set up in the #4 line and dropped his opening set 3-6. However, he quickly responded with his own 6-3 win before taking the third set tiebreaker 1-0 (10-7) to ensure the Patriots would add a sixth point to their total.
In the final match of the men's day, Miquelard lined up in the #6 slot and would collect a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) straight sets win to ensure the Patriots 7-0 sweep on the day.
WOMEN'S MATCH: #29 UT Tyler: 4, #24 DBU: 3
On the women's side, their match would get underway at 1 p.m. as the Patriots celebrated senior day by honoring seniors
Kanika Sivaraman and
Allison Schwartz.
In doubles,
Yona Bancarel and
Natalia Gorzny combined for a big 6-2 victory in the #1 line, but DBU would battle back with a 3-6 win in the #3 line and a 6-7 win in the #2 line to take the doubles point and lead 1-0.
The Patriots would come roaring back in singles, sparked by a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win in line #1 by Bancarel. She was followed just under 20 minutes later by
Carla Rodier, who added a 7-5, 6-3 straight sets win to put UT Tyler back in front.
DBU clawed back as they got a win in line #6 to even the match, but Gorzny in line #2 stormed back from a 4-6 first set to earn wins of 6-1, 6-3 to put the Patriots in front for good.
The fourth and clinching point for the Patriots came in the #4 line, as
Paula Castellanos provided her own dramatic comeback. She would drop her first set 3-6, but came back with wins of 6-2, 6-2 to put the Patriots up 4-2.
DBU would add one more win in the #5 line, but UT Tyler would have enough to win the match over #24 DBU.
UT Tyler will be back to work next week as they head west to battle it out with both Midwestern State and Cameron. The Patriots and Mustangs will face off on April 17 while the Patriots and Aggies face off on April 19.
