Women's Tennis Gets a Runner Up Finish in LSC Championship

The Patriots stun top seed St. Mary's in match one, but drop to Dallas Baptist in championship match.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – UT Tyler Women's Tennis made history with their first-ever appearance in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship match on Saturday. The Patriots advanced to the final after a strong 4-1 victory over top-seeded St. Mary's in the semifinals on the day. In the championship match, UT Tyler came up short against sixth-seeded Dallas Baptist, falling 4-1 to finish as the tournament runner-up.

SEMIFINALS

In doubles, it was the Patriots who got out to the hot start, taking the #2 and #3 lines to take a 1-0 lead. Carla Rodier and Allison Schwartz earned a 6-2 win in line #2, and Kanika Sivaraman and Paula Castellanos followed with a 6-3 win in line #3.

In singles, the Patriots added another key win as Schwartz moved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 straight sets win in line #5.

The Rattlers responded with a win in the #6 line to get themselves on the board, but Yona Bancarel picked up a huge win in the #1 line in scores of 6-2, 6-1 to put the Patriots ahead 3-1 and on match point with three singles matches remaining.

Paula Castellanos would battle through a dramatic first set, ultimately taking a 7-6 (7-2) win. In set two, She kept things rolling, running out to a 4-0 lead before securing a 6-4 win and providing the winning point for the Patriots.

CHAMPIONSHIP

In doubles, Dallas Baptist got out front early on the Patriots. They would take the #1 and #2 lines to start the match up 1-0. 

In singles, the Patriots grabbed the #1 line when Yona Bancarel snatched the only point for the team as she took straight sets by a score of 6-4 in both. However, Dallas Baptist would close the championship match out by taking lines #2, #4, and #5 to finish off the Patriots.

With the conclusion of the tournament, Yona Bancarel and Allison Schwartz received All-Tournament honors.
