Second Half Surge Pushes Men’s Soccer to 2-1 Win over Red Leafs

Goals from Oscar Sosa and Hugo Marques gave the Patriots the win in their non-conference finale.

FRISCO, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer took a 2-1 win over Simon Fraser to close out non-conference play with a win at the Toyota Soccer Center.

The Patriots got key goals from Oscar Sosa and Hugo Marques to push them into the lead in the final 25 minutes of action and ultimately take the key win in regional competition.

UT Tyler had the early pressure, taking seven of the first nine shots in the contest. Landon Neely put one on goal in the 15th minute, but it was saved by the Simon Fraser keeper. Jason Verhoogen took a shot on goal of his own in the 35th minute, but again it was saved.

Despite the momentum early, Simon Fraser found their way to flip the script in the 40th minute, scoring a goal to take the lead on their first shot on goal of the match.

The Patriots began the second half similar to the first, recording the first four shots, including one on net by Tony Ngombi, but still were unable to find their equalizer.

That all changed in the 66th minute, as the Patriots would break through as a player was brought down inside the box, ultimately drawing a penalty kick. Oscar Sosa stepped to the spot and slotted home the goal in the bottom left corner and promptly tied the game.

Less than 10 minutes later in the 74th minute, the Patriots found their game winner as Hugo Marques struck the perfect shot to take a 2-1 lead. Danny DeMarais slotted a pass over to the left side of the box, and Marques got a good foot on it to beat the Red Leafs keeper.

Goalkeeper Luke Ryan would stay stout to close out the match, making a pair of saves in the final four minutes as the Red Leafs attempted to equalize but were unsuccessful.

Oscar Sosa scored just his second goal of his career in the contest, while Marques scored his third of his career and first game winner in the Patriots win.

UT Tyler will now set their sights on LSC competition as they head to Dallas, Texas to take on DBU on October 1st at 7:30 p.m.
