A LOOK BACK AT THE FALL 2024 SLATE
Â
In the individual portion of the schedule last fall, the Patriots enjoyed a brilliant showing, as
Carel Wessel and
Daniil Felker combined to win the 2024 ITA South Central Regional doubles title, and Wessel won the 2024 ITA Regional Singles title to ensure qualification to the ITA Cup.
Â
Eight different men's players advanced in the regional singles bracket, and three different doubles pairs made it to at least the quarterfinal round to show the depth of the Patriots roster.
Â
On the women's side of the ITA regional, the Patriots saw
Yona Bancarel advance in the singles draw, along with a pair of other players making deep runs within the consolation bracket. Additionally,
Carla Rodier finished runner up in the B draw.
Â
On the doubles side, again the Patriots showed resiliency, putting a pair of teams into the semifinals of the doubles draw consolation bracket, with one team going on to finish as runner up.
Â
THE SPRING 2025 SEASON
Â
The spring 2025 campaign for UT Tyler men's tennis will go down as the best in the NCAA era of the program. They won the LSC Regular Season title and yet again punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. There, they made a deep run, taking down Midwestern State, Edinboro, and Azusa Pacific to fight their way to the NCAA Semifinals. There, they fought tough against Washburn, but would fall just short.
Â
In total, the Patriots finished 24-3 overall and saw
Carel Wessel,
Artiom Dorofeev, and
Daniil Felker each earn ITA All-America honors for their dominant efforts through the season. Dorofeev was also named the ITA Division II Rookie of the Year, and head coach
Chris Bizot was named the ITA South Central Region and LSC Coach of the Year.
Â
On the women's side, the Patriots enjoyed their best season since joining the Division II ranks. They went 18-10, the most wins for the program since 2016, and punched their ticket to the LSC Tournament Championship for the first time in program history.
Â
Six different players earned All-LSC honors, and all but one of those honorees will make their return to the program this season.
Â
RETURNING CORE AND STRONG NEWCOMERS
Â
On the men's side, they will bring back all but two players from that memorable run. Included in that group are returning All-Americans Wessel, Felker, and Dorofeev. LSC Co-Newcomer of the Year
Martin Despodov and All-LSC honoree Malo Polesquen join a squad with plenty of depth.
Â
Manuel Lassacher and
Samuel Antwi join the men's program as two highly touted recruits. Lassacher comes in as a top 15 ranked player in Austria, while Antwi was the #2 ranked player in the junior college ranks last season and also represented Ghana in the Davis Cup.
Â
On the women's side, they will return six of the nine players from last year's strong year, and add the efforts of four newcomers to help them reach even further heights.
Yona Bancarel and
Natalia Gorzny lead that returning charge, with the pair earning All-LSC honors in four different categories last season.
Â
Claudia Di Leonardo,
Hailey Zhang,
Maria Antonio Ortega, and
Sabrina Pugh will join the Patriots program and will be a part of one of the top recruiting classes in recent program history.
Â
Di Leonardo joins the program as a transfer from Division I Southeastern Louisiana and will bring some veteran experience. Zhang and Pugh hail from Texas, with Zhang being a top 200 player and Pugh being a top 400 player according to tennisrecruiting.net. Antonio Ortega joins the program as a top 120 player in Spain, rounding out the incoming class.
Â
