Patriots Stout Defense Leads to Big Win Over Lobos

UT Tyler held Sul Ross State to just 27.7% from the field and just 38 points in a strong win on Saturday afternoon.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler women's basketball picked up their sixth straight LSC win with a 66-38 decision over Sul Ross State on Southside Bank Night inside the HPC.

The Patriots held the Lobos to just 13-for-47 (27.7%) from the field and allowed just 11 total points in the first half on their way to a 28 point margin of victory.

KK Bass led all scorers with 18 points as she went 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from deep while going 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

The Patriots kicked off the contest with a defensive effort that saw the Lobos commit five turnovers and go 3-for-12 from the field in the first quarter. The Patriots raced out to a 17-7 advantage, leaning on six points from Bass and five more from Leila Davis to spur the offense.

That effort carried over into the second quarter, where the Patriots held the Lobos to 0-for-8 from the field, with their only points coming from the free throw line. UT Tyler got four points each from Polina Latysheva, Mileina Sablinskaite, and Lilli Hakkarainen as they led 29-11 at the halftime break.

The defensive shutdown from the Patriots saw them hold the Lobos without a made field goal from the :05 second mark of the first quarter all the way until the 8:42 mark of the third quarter. That third quarter would be the best of the night for both teams, with each side shooting over 50% and scoring over 15 points. The Patriots still held the upper hand, knocking down three triples and seven total field goals as they outscored the Lobos 25-16.

The Patriots would shut down Sul Ross State for 10 more minutes to close out the game, forcing them to shoot just 25% in the final quarter of action to put the finishing touches on the rout.

Both Leila Davis and Polina Latysheva would score nine points in the contest, with Davis grabbing five rebounds and two steals. Latysheva added four assists and an additional two steals.

UT Tyler held a 19-7 advantage in bench points, a 24-8 advantage in points in the paint, and a 30-11 advantage in turnovers as they completed a total-effort win.

UT Tyler will now hit the road to take on St. Edward's and St. Mary's. The contest with the Hilltoppers will be January 15th at 5:30 p.m., and the contest with the Rattlers will be January 17th at 1 p.m.
