CANYON, TEXAS – The UT Tyler baseball program fell 7–6 to West Texas A&M in the series finale on Sunday, resulting in the Patriots' second consecutive series split. UT Tyler recorded 12 hits in the contest as the final three games of the series were all decided by a single run.
West Texas A&M struck first in the bottom of the third inning. A single, double, and another single plated two runs to give the Buffs a 2–0 lead. The Patriots responded immediately in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits to take their first lead of the day.
Cole Ketzner opened the inning with a solo home run to right center. Connor Clark followed with a one-out double and later stole third before coming home after two walks and a Drew Schmidt sacrifice fly. Another walk followed by a wild pitch allowed the Patriots to take a 3–2 advantage.
The Buffs answered in the bottom of the fourth. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch set up the tying run, evening the score at 3–3. UT Tyler regained the lead in the fifth after back-to-back singles applied pressure, leading to a throwing error that allowed the Patriots to move ahead 4–3.
West Texas A&M quickly tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth. A single, wild pitch, groundout, and sacrifice fly brought the score to 4–4.
For the third straight inning, the Patriots responded. Drew Schmidt led off the sixth with a double and later scored on another double from Kaston Mason to give UT Tyler a 5–4 lead. The advantage held until the seventh when the Buffs hit a leadoff home run to tie the game once again at 5–5.
UT Tyler regained the lead in the eighth. Schmidt recorded his second double of the game before Mason followed with a single to put runners on the corners. A double play allowed Schmidt to cross the plate, giving the Patriots a 6–5 edge.
West Texas A&M delivered the decisive blow in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, a hit-by-pitch and single set the table before a two-run double gave the Buffs a 7–6 lead that would hold as the final score.
Six Patriots recorded hits in the game, with four players finishing with multiple-hit performances. Mason and Ketzner combined to go 6-for-8 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brock Bearden finished 2-for-5 at the plate, while Schmidt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
UT Tyler moves to 16–6 on the season after splitting its last two series. The Patriots return home on March 13 when they host Eastern New Mexico with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
