Women’s Tennis Punches Ticket to Championship Match with 4-3 Win

The Patriots withstood a Rambelles rally in singles to move into the LSC Championship match for the second straight year.

Box Score ENNIS, TEXAS – UT Tyler women's tennis has punched their ticket to the LSC Tournament championship match on Saturday afternoon after taking a 4-3 win over No. 4 seed Angelo State in the semifinals.

The Patriots jumped on the Rambelles early in doubles, taking both the #1 and #2 lines to secure a 1-0 lead. Yona Bancarel and Natalia Gorzny secured a 6-4 win in the top line, and Paula Castellanos and Maria Antonio Ortega added a 6-2 win in the #2 line.

The Rambelles would answer in the #4 singles line to even the match at 1-1, but Bancarel again came up big with a 7-5, 6-3 straight sets win to put the Patriots back in front yet again as she took the #1 line.

The two teams would trade blows yet again in the #3 and #2 line, this time with the Rambelles taking that #3 line to even the match again. The Patriots had the answer yet again, this time with Gorzny in line #2. She would split her first two sets 6-3, 4-6, but then rattled off a 6-3 win in the third set in which she never trailed to put the team on match point.

The Rambelles would stay gritty, taking another straight sets win in line #5 to even the match yet again, this time leaving it all to the #6 line for the match.

Paula Castellanos stood in the big spot for the Patriots and delivered a 6-0 opening set. She kept up the momentum with a 2-0 lead in set two, and from then on carried at least a one game lead on her way to a 6-4 win to lead the team to a 4-3 victory.

No. 1 seed UT Tyler will now take on No. 2 seed Midwestern State in the championship match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. That match will be back at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
