LAWTON, Okla.—University of Texas at Tyler (2-2) came away with a 4-0 shutout victory over NCAA Division II opponent Cameron University (5-5) Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of the series.
For the third time in four games this season, senior outfielder
Graham Welch (Plano, Texas) recorded a base hit in the first Patriot at-bat of the afternoon. He doubled to lead off the bottom half of the first inning but was later picked off at second base with neither team able to score in the opening frame.
Making his second start of the season and first of the series, junior right-hander
Austin Schneider (Keller, Texas) shutdown the Aggie hitters early. He struck out two batters in the first inning and added another in the second inning. In the third inning, he brought his punch out total to six after he struck out the side.
Both teams threatened in the fifth inning with senior infielder
Blake Wilson (Midlothian, Texas) picking up a two out double to left field. Senior catcher
Zach Pavelock (Iola, Texas) put two on the base paths when he was hit by a pitch after the Wilson double. Neither was able to advance as the game went into the bottom half of the fifth locked in a scoreless tie.
Cameron also had their opportunities in the home half of the fifth after the first two batters of the inning reached base. After a one-out walk loaded the bases, freshman right-handed pitcher
Matthew McMillan (Pflugerville, Texas) came out of the bullpen to face the jam. The Aggies would leave the bases loaded after McMillan struck out both of the next two batters, maintaining the 0-0 tie into the sixth inning of play.
UT Tyler's offense did not let up in the sixth inning with Welch led off the inning with a double to left field, but was out at third trying to stretch it to a triple. Freshman infielder
Zachary Sanchez (San Antonio, Texas) was next up and reached second base courtesy of an error on the Cameron catcher. After a groundout by senior outfielder
Josh Burns (Center, Texas) advanced Sanchez to third base, senior infielder
Bowie Farris (Denton, Texas) ripped a double to bring in Sanchez as the first run of the game.
The scoring continued in the top of the seventh inning when the Patriots added two more runs. The first four batters of the inning reach beginning with sophomore outfielder
Tanner Roach (Whitehouse, Texas) getting a base knock to left field. Roach would steal second base and eventually reach third on a fielder's choice to Wilson. With runners on the corners, recorded an infield single that plated Roach for the second run of the game. Sanchez was then walked to load the bases while a passed ball advanced each runner and gave UT Tyler a 3-0 advantage.
Roach again singled in the top of the seventh inning, this time with two outs. He advanced to second on the play courtesy of an Aggie error which set up an RBI single by Wilson. It was the fourth run of the day for the Patriots who went in to the bottom half of the eighth with a 4-0 lead.
Despite loading the bases again in the top of the ninth inning, UT Tyler was unable to score another run. Trying to put the game away, the Patriots recorded three straight outs after allowing the first Aggie batter of the inning to reach first base, sealing a 4-0 victory in the final game of the series.
Schneider picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season while he also kept his earned run average at 0.00 for the season in 6.1 innings of action. Schneider did not allow a hit on Sunday while McMillan surrendered the only to Aggie hits of the afternoon in his three innings of work. McMillan did strike out four batters while freshman right-handed pitcher
Zachary Fernandez (Tyler, Texas) pitched the final 1.2 innings and struck out three in his collegiate debut.
The Patriots will take a detour on their way back for a single game against Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Tuesday. It will be the fifth game for UT Tyler against an NCAA Division II opponent this season with first pitch set for 2 p.m. in Durant, Oklahoma.
