ORLANDO, Fla.—The University of Texas at Tyler Men's Tennis (2-7) dropped a pair of matches on the final day of their four-match trip to central Florida on Wednesday. The lost, 5-2, in the first match to NCAA Division II Post University before being swept by NCAA Division I Xavier University.
Beginning the day against Post, the Patriots earned a victory at number-two doubles. Sophomore
Jose Currea (Bogota, Columbia) and junior
Daniel Rodriguez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) picked up their second win together this season with a 7-5 victory.
In singles play, senior
Michael Apple (Memphis, Tennessee) earned a comeback victory after dropping a tight first set, 7-6. He picked up a win in the second set, 6-3, before sealing the match in the in the third, 10-4. Junior
Juan Martinez (San Antonio, Texas) earned his first victory of the season at number-six with back-to-back 6-4 set scores.
Moving to the second match of the day, the Patriots dropped all three doubles matches with the top two teams both falling, 6-4.
Three singles matches went three sets with the Patriots putting up a fight against the NCAA Division I Musketeers. Apple dropped the first set in his match at number-one before bouncing back with a 6-3 win in the second set. Apple eventually dropped the third set and the match. Rodriguez and Currea also forced third sets but lost their matches at numbers-two and four. Rodriguez dominated his second set, 6-1, while Currea jumped out to an early lead with a 6-3 win in the first set.
The Patriots will now get more than a week off before returning to action at the Summers Tennis Center for the final time this season. UT Tyler will host NCAA Division II and future Lone Star Conference opponent Midwestern
