ALPINE, Texas—The University of Texas at Tyler (20-2) completed a three-game sweep of Sul Ross State University (8-13) with a 6-1 road victory on Sunday afternoon.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Colleen Bentke (Brenham, Texas) dominated the early innings after getting the win in the series opener on Friday. She retired the Lobos in order during the first three innings and struck out three batters in the process.
In the second and third innings, the Patriots got leadoff singles freshman infielder
Chaney Tart (Malakoff, Texas) and sophomore outfielder
Haleigh Swinney (Crosby, Texas) but neither could get to home plate. Senior infielder
Theresa Gonzales (Elgin, Texas) continued the trend with a single to center field as the first batter in the bottom of the fourth inning. Later in the inning, with freshman infielder
Allyssa Young (Franklin, Louisiana) pinch running, the first run came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior utility
Lynsey Mitchell (Liberty Hill, Texas) to put the Patriots on top. The second UT Tyler run of the inning came around to score on a single to center field by senior outfielder
Nicole Garcia (Sugar Land, Texas).
The Lobos followed by going down in order for the fourth-consecutive inning to begin the game which allowed the Patriots to add to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter again reached for UT Tyler courtesy of a Sul Ross St. throwing error. A single by sophomore infielder
Mak Dominguez (League City, Texas) with two outs allowed the pinch running sophomore outfielder
Shea Smith (League City, Texas) to score the team's third run of the contest.
An action packed seventh inning began with an infield single by Tart followed by another base hit by Dominguez. With one out, senior infielder
Serena Saldivar (Garland, Texas) double to center field to plate both runners on base. The Patriots took a 6-0 advantage on a Garcia double to left field to bring home Smith who was pinch running.
The first three Lobo batters reached in the bottom of the seventh with Sul Ross St. trying to extend the game. They scored on one before junior right-handed pitcher
Whitney Romero (Lafayette, Louisiana) entered the game. She recorded the final three outs, striking out a pair of batters, to seal the Patriot victory and three-gam sweep.
After Bentke's four innings of work, junior right-handed pitcher
Miranda Leal (San Antonio, Texas) pitched two innings of relief before Romero closed out the game. At the plate, both Garcia and Dominguez picked up three hits with Garcia also driving in a pair of runs. Also driving in two runs was Saldivar who went 2-4 at the plate.
The Patriots will return to Suddenlink Field next weekend when they host Belhaven University for a three-game series. The two teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday before competing in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
