TYLER, Texas—The University of Texas Tyler Men's Tennis (4-8) began their two-match weekend with a shutout, 7-0, victory Friday over East Texas Baptist University (5-7) at the Summers Tennis Center.
At the top of the doubles lineup, senior
Michael Apple (Memphis, Tennessee) and junior
Gabriel Hidalgo (Barquisimento, Venezuela) made quick work of their opponents with an 8-0 victory. Picking up a team-high fourth win together this season at number-two were junior
Daniel Rodriguez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and sophomore
Jose Currea (Bogota, Columbia) The duo moved to 4-3 on the season after fighting to an 8-6 win.
UT Tyler won all six singles matches highlighted by senior
Tomas Parra (Maracaibo, Venezuela) winning his sixth-match of the season, the most on the team. At number-four, he defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-0. Four Patriots won their second match of the day with a win in singles action including Apple at the top of the lineup. He won his match 6-0, 6-2, while Rodriguez earned a three-set win at number-two. Hidalgo and Currea both won their second matches of the day with convincing wins at numbers-three and five. Senior
Alvar De La Mano (Barcelona, Spain) rounded out the singles lineup with a 6-0, 6-4 win to seal the sweep.
The Patriots continue their weekend with their final home match of the season on Saturday. They take on Belhaven University beginning at 10 a.m. at the Summers Tennis Center.
