Patriots Fall To MSU In Lone Star Battle

UT Tyler fell to Midwestern State, 59-44, as the Patriots returned to action in the New Year

TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler fell to Midwestern State Thursday night, 59-44, as Lone Star Conference action resumed after the New Year.

Both teams shot below 20 percent from three-point range, so Midwestern State used a 41-36 rebounding edge and a 30-22 advantage in scoring in the paint to produce the divisional win following an 11-day break between games for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Ty Glover scored a game-high 20 points along with a game-high 4 steals, but the Mustangs' steady effort was paced by Jalin Brown's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead MSU to the victory.

With the loss, UT Tyler dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the Lone Star Conference, and the Patriots are now 0-2 in divisional play. Midwestern State improved to 2-9 overall, 2-3 in the LSC, and 1-0 within the division, which also includes Texas A&M-Commerce, Oklahoma Christian, UAFS (Arkansas-Fort Smith), and Cameron.

Turning Point: Bryson Power's putback with 2:13 left in the first half tied the game at 15-15, but Midwestern State closed out the period with seven straight points to take a 22-15 halftime lead. Elijah Lee capped the run with Midwestern State's only three-pointer of the first half after the Mustangs missed their first 10 from long distance, sending MSU into halftime with its largest lead of the half.

How It Happened: Ty Glover led UT Tyler to an early 5-point lead, drilling a three-pointer en route to the first 5 points of the game and an early 7-2 lead over Midwestern State. The Mustangs responded with an 8-0 run, taking a 10-7 lead on a Jalin Brown layup with 9:09 remaining in the opening half. Glover scored 11 of UT Tyler's 15 points in the first half before MSU closed out the half with a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 halftime lead.

The Mustangs scored first in the second half, extending the run to 9-0 before Darius Alford's jumper on the Patriots' opening second-half possession cut the lead to 24-17. With 15:29 to play, Jared Jenkins hit a three-pointer which cut the margin to four, 26-22, the first of four times UT Tyler cut the lead to four. A Glover layup answered a pair of MSU free throws to make it 28-24, and Jared Jenkins matched a Drake Dusek three-pointer with a trey which kept the Patriots within four, 31-27, with 13:37 remaining. A Jenkins layup with 11:53 to play made it 33-29, but Midwestern State hit a pair of threes during an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 41-29 with 9:24 left in the game.

The Patriots scored 10 of the next 15, pulling within seven, 46-39, on a Bryson Power dunk with just under four minutes to play. However, the Mustangs went on another 8-0 run, this time pushing the lead into double digits for the final 3:12 of the game.

UT Tyler Standouts: Ty Glover led all scorers with 20 points, his fourth 20-point game this season, and he added team-highs of 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Bryson Power added a season-highs of 10 points and 7 rebounds, while Darius Alford contributed 9 points and a team-high 3 assists.

Midwestern State Standouts: Jalin Brown produced a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double along with a pair of blocks to lead the MSU defense. Evan McCarthy came off the bench for 13 points, leading the Mustang reserves to a 26-0 margin in bench scoring.

By The Numbers: Both teams shot below 20 percent on three-pointers, with Midwestern State hitting 4-of-23 (.174) and UT Tyler hitting 4-of-22 (.182) … However, MSU was 17-of-27 (.630) on two-point attempts and 13-of-17 (.765) from the free throw line… The Patriots made 14-of-34 (.412) two-point attempts and shot 4-for-12 (.333) from the line… MSU produced a 41-36 rebounding edge and notched a 30-22 edge in points in the paint… Both teams committed 18 turnovers and collected 7 steals, although the Mustangs registered a 13-9 margin in points off turnovers.

What's Next: UT Tyler takes on another Lone Star Conference divisional foe Saturday (Jan. 4), hosting Cameron University at 4 p.m.
