TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler nearly knocked off one of the Lone Star Conference's top four teams Saturday, but Lubbock Christian survived to sweep its East Texas road trip after pulling off a late comeback for a 65-62 win over the Patriots.
Lubbock Christian rallied from a 9-point deficit with 2:20 left in the game to pull off the win, scoring on its final five possessions of the contest, including a crucial three-point play with 12 seconds left that gave LCU a 63-62 lead, its first lead since the first two minutes of the second half. Micah Fuller's coast-to-coast layup through traffic in the lane did not fall, and the Chaparrals secured the rebound and the win in the closing seconds with another pair of free throws.
Ty Glover and Darius Alford led UT Tyler with 18 points each, and Ansu Sesay was a force at the defensive end with 9 rebounds and 5 blocks.
With the loss, UT Tyler dropped to 6-14 overall and 3-12 in the Lone Star Conference, while Lubbock Christian improved to 13-6 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
Turning Point: UT Tyler built its largest lead of the game late in the second half, using a 10-2 run to extend a 51-50 edge with 4:58 left into a 61-52 margin with 2:20 to play. Jared Jenkins scored the first two and last two points of the run, and Ty Glover scored five in the middle of the run, which gave the Patriots a late nine-point edge. However, Lubbock Christian scored on its next four possessions, starting with consecutive Lloyd Daniels jumpers which cut the margin to 61-56 with 1:18 remaining in the game. Xavier Fogle made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:06 left, but Preston Hicks answered with a four-point play at the other end when he was fouled while making a three-pointer. The and-one cut the lead to 62-60 with just under a minute left, and Daniels converted a three-point play with 12 seconds left to put LCU in front for good.
How It Happened: Lubbock Christian opened the game with a 7-0 run, and the Chaparrals still led by that margin at 18-11 with 11:33 remaining in the first half. Darius Alford sparked a 9-1 run with five points, hitting a three-pointer with 8:33 left to give UT Tyler its first lead of the game, 20-19. The lead changed hands twice more in the half before LCU tied the game at 32-32 on a Lloyd Daniels bucket heading into halftime.
Daniels made a layup to open up the second-half scoring, giving Lubbock Christian a 34-32 lead, but Ty Glover quickly answered that with consecutive three-point makes, sparking a 10-2 burst which gave the Patriots a 42-34 lead with 15:51 left in the game. Lubbock Christian got back within one point three times in the second half, the last time after another Daniels layup cut the UT Tyler lead to 51-50 with 4:58 left. However, UT Tyler scored 10 of the next 12, extending the lead to 61-52 on a pair of Jared Jenkins free throws with 2:20 to play.
Lloyd Daniels scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, and nine of them came during the final 2:04 to spark Lubbock Christian's late rally. The 13-1 run down the stretch gave LCU a 65-62 lead with 5.1 seconds left, and a desperation three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.
UT Tyler Standouts: Ty Glover and Darius Alford each scored a team-high 18 points, and Micah Fuller added 9 points. Glover exploded for 15 of his 18 in the second half. Ansu Sesay produced 6 points plus a team-high 9 rebounds and a game-high 5 blocks. Jared Jenkins scored 7 points with a team-high 3 assists.
Lubbock Christian Standouts: Lloyd Daniels scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including 7-of-7 free throws after halftime. LCU had three others in double figures, as Ty Caswell notched a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double while Parker Hicks scored 13 points and Rashaan Proctor added 12.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler produced a 37-33 edge in rebounds, which helped the Patriots to a 12-11 advantage in second chance points… Lubbock Christian finished with 9 turnovers and UT Tyler had 11 turnovers, but LCU posted a 13-9 margin in points off turnovers… UT Tyler held a 15-6 margin in fast break points…. The Patriots shot 39 percent overall (21-for-54) and from three-point range (7-for-18)... Lubbock Christian cooled off from a 50 percent (13-for-26) field goal shooting clip in the first half to finish at 43 percent (24-for-56) overall and 33 percent (4-for-12) from beyond the arc… The only three-pointer Lubbock Christian made after halftime was the three-pointer Hicks made with a foul as he made the free throw to complete the four-point play.
What's Next: UT Tyler plays a single game on the road next week, visiting Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Feb. 8.
