LAWTON, Okla. -- UT Tyler led after the opening quarter and rallied from a late deficit in a Friday night road game at Cameron, but the Patriots fell behind in the second and third quarters in a 72-58 defeat.
UT Tyler led by 5 after the opening quarter, 17-12, behind six early points from Shala Robinson, but the Aggies responded with a 24-point second quarter and 18 more in the third to build a large cushion over the Patriots heading into the final period. Kelsey Crouse led UT Tyler's balanced scoring with 12 points, while Azaria Reed added 10.
The setback dropped UT Tyler to 0-10 on the season, while Cameron improved to 5-5.
Turning Point: Midway through the third quarter, Josephine Elliott knocked down a three-pointer that kept UT Tyler within a dozen points, but Cameron responded with a 10-0 run to extend the lead to a 22-point margin, 52-30. The Aggies took a 19-point edge into the final quarter and led by at least 14 points the rest of the way.
How It Happened: Kelsey Crouse and Shala Robinson combined for a 9-0 run that lifted UT Tyler to an early 11-5 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Patriots maintained the lead the rest of the opening quarter to take a 17-12 lead over the host Aggies.
The Patriots' last lead came midway through the second quarter, when a Taylor Jackson layup gave UT Tyler a 21-19 lead with 5:44 remaining in the second quarter. Cameron answered Jackson's bucket with a 17-6 run to take a 36-27 halftime lead, and the Aggies extended the lead with an 18-8 third-quarter scoring margin to push the lead to 54-35. UT Tyler scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, however, cutting the gap to 14 points for the final 72-58 margin.
UT Tyler Standouts: Kelsey Crouse scored a team-high 12 points, and Azaria Reed was also in double figures for the Patriots with 10 points. Shala Robinson scored 6 and grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds to lead UT Tyler to a 48-46 rebounding edge.
Cameron Standouts: Stephanie Peterson led all scorers with 14 points and a game-high 6 assists, while Katie King and Kiara Lovings came off the bench to score 12 points each.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler posted a 48-46 rebounding edge, its first positive rebounding margin this season… The Patriots' 58-point total also represented a season-high… UT Tyler forced 19 turnovers, but those giveaways resulted in just 9 points, while Cameron forced 26 turnovers and cashed them in for 26 points… The Aggies compiled 42 bench points, with two double-digit scores off the bench… UT Tyler shot 33 percent (20-for-60) from the field including a 28 percent (5-for-18) clip from three-point range… Cameron shot 35 percent (24-for-69) overall and 31 percent (12-for-39) on three-pointers.
