TYLER, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler women's soccer team will get started in week number two of the Lone Star Conference women's soccer schedule with a home game on Wednesday night against #12 DBU followed by a road trip to UT Permian Basin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Patriots split the opening week of games in LSC play with a 2-1 win against Texas A&M International on their home pitch Wednesday night and a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Oklahoma Christian on the road on Saturday afternoon. UT Tyler is 3-2-0 on the year and is one of five LSC sides to enter week number two with a 1-1-0 record in conference play.
OPPOSITE ENDS OF 2-1 DECISIONS
UT Tyler opened up the inaugural week of Lone Star Conference play last week on opposite ends of a pair of 2-1 decisions. The Patriots returned home last Wednesday and used an improbable goal from freshman
Vanessa Bart in the 85
th minute to open up LSC play with a 1-0 record.
Bart kicked in a ball from deep in the Dustdevils box that somehow found the opposite top corner of the net.
Bart's 85
th minute goal answered a penalty kick goal from the Dustdevils in the 69
th minute that evened the match up at 1-1 after a first half
Sydnee Garner goal for the Patriots. Both goals were the first collegiate scores for each Patriot, and moved UT Tyler to 3-1 on the year.
Saturday's game against Oklahoma Christian was dominated mainly by the Patriots, but a pair of unfortunate goals ultimately handed UT Tyler their first conference loss of the 2021 season in overtime. Senior
Priscilla Rincon scored the second straight 85
th minute goal in as many matches for UT Tyler to send the game to overtime.
ROUND ONE COMPLETE
A long Lone Star Conference slate of games that will feature two games per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays for each of the LSC's 14 squads came to an end with just two teams winning both of their matches. DBU and St. Mary's each went 2-0 to start off the 2021 conference schedule, while Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Christian both remain undefeated with 1-0-1 records.
The Patriots were one of five teams to finish week one with a 1-1 record.
EVERYBODY GETTING INTO THE ACT
Head coach
Stefani Webb continues to utilize a deep rotation of options through the first five games of 2021, a strategy that has in large part paid off in each match up to this point. 13 different Patriots have recorded at least one point so far in 2021, with nine of those individuals notching two or more points.
Sophomore
Sarah Flannelly is the only Patriot to have scored multiple goals on the year with two, while an astounding eight other individuals have found the back of the net for coach Webb. Of the nine goal scorers for UT Tyler, six have been freshman, illustrating that the future of UT Tyler women's soccer is certainly in good hands moving forward.
NOT AFRAID TO LET IT FLY
A young and deep Patriot lineup has not been afraid to put shots up from anywhere on the field through five matches in 2021. UT Tyler has outshot all five of their opponents by a 114-to-44 margin, and has recorded more shot attempts than the opposition in every game this season.
UT Tyler leads the Lone Star Conference with an average of 23.00 shots per game, and is one of just two teams alongside #21 West Texas A&M to average 10 or more shots on goal per game with 11.00 a contest.
Freshman
Faith Adje leads the team with 13 total shot attempts on the year, and is tied with classmate
Sydnee Garner with six shot on goal attempts.
SCOUTING DBU AND HISTORY WITH THE PATRIOTS
#12 DBU will be the ultimate test for the Patriots on Wednesday night at the Citizen's 1
st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex as the two-time defending Lone Star Conference Regular Season Champions come to town. The Patriots have been defeated just once by a Lone Star Conference foe since joining the league in 2019, a 1-0 double overtime loss at the hands of Angelo State in last year's Lone Star Conference Tournament Finals, but have never been defeated in an LSC regular season contest.
DBU is 6-1 on the year with a pair of top 25 wins already under the belt in 2-1 and 5-0 wins over Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist to start the season. The lone blemish on the record came in a 3-1 loss back on Sept. 8 at the hands of UC Colorado Springs in Dallas.
The Patriots have rattled off four straight wins since that loss and opened up LSC play with 6-2 and 5-4 wins over Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M, respectively.
Four different players have scored four goals on the year for DBU in Abigail Olmos, Michelle Gonzales, Delaney Schmidt and Ashley Merrill. The Patriots have scored the second highest number of goals on the year in the LSC with 24.
Wednesday night's meeting in Tyler will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs with DBU holding the all-time series edge at 2-1. UT Tyler has dropped the last two matches after winning the inaugural meeting between the two sides back on Sept. 4, 2010.
SCOUTING UT PERMIAN BASIN AND HISTORY WITH THE FALCONS
Saturday's trip to Odessa, Texas will give way to a much different level of side in a UT Permian Basin team that enters the match with a 1-6 record on the year. The Falcons lost by 6-0 and 8-0 final tallies in their first LSC matches of the season against West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Commerce, and have scored just four goals so far in 2021.
Alexandra Sanches and Yarely Orono have both scored two goals so far for UT Permian Basin, while keeper Jenna McEnaney ranks second in the Lone Star Conference with an average of 6.00 saves per contest.
The two University of Texas affiliated schools have met just one prior time in women's soccer back on Sept. 26, 2019, a match that went in favor of the Patriots with a 3-0 victory.
