BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – Multiple Patriots finished in the top 10 of their respective events on Friday afternoon and one school record fell as UT Tyler battled amongst some of the top competition in the area.
Angel Contreras wrote his name in the record books for the third time in three events in the indoor season. This time Contreras shattered the 3000 meter run school record by 29.05 seconds. Contreras ran a time of 8:19.55 and also earned himself an NCAA provisional mark. That time is the 11
th fastest mark in Division II this season and the fastest among LSC competition.
Lesley Conway was up for the Patriots in the women's long jump. Conway jumped a distance of 5.36 meters on just her second attempt of the competition. That jump secured her a ninth place finish and was tops amongst Division II competition.
Over on the women's pole vault, freshman darling
Abeni Kratzmeyer continues to impress amongst national competition. Kratzmeyer cleared a distance of 3.81 meters on her fourth turn in the event. That height was strong enough for a solo third place finish and was just .1 meters behind first place.
The height cleared by Kratzmeyer will go down as her third NCAA provisional mark on the season. The finish from Kratzmeyer is also the highest finish amongst Division II competition in the event.
The women's 60 meter hurdles provided the strongest finish of the day for UT Tyler, as two athletes finished in the top four. Senior
MyKaela Alfred placed second overall in the event, and
Summer Grubbs wrapped up the fourth position. Alfred posted a time of 9.11 seconds and placed second overall. Grubbs finished with a time of 9.15 seconds and finished just outside the top qualifiers in fourth position.
Grubbs also nearly broke a school record in the high jump event. She finished with a height of 1.58 meters and placed herself in fifth in the event. Grubbs nailed the height on just her second attempt, but was unable to clear the height of 1.63 meters to continue in the competition.
In the men's 60 meter hurdles, UT Tyler placed three different competitors in the top 12 of the standings.
Tristan Meadors placed himself in seventh by running a time of 8.32 seconds. Finishing just behind Meadors was
Corey Perryman. Perryman ran a time of 8.43 seconds to place in tenth and finish just outside of advancing into the next round.
Ashton Turner also competed for the Patriots and finished in twelfth. His time of 8.61 seconds finished just .29 seconds behind eighth.
Three Patriots finished in the top 13 of the men's mile run.
Landon Thornton and
Lorenzo Chavez placed 10 and 11 respectively as they finished just .36 seconds apart. Junior
Jack Gipson ran a time of 4:36.13 to finish 4.5 seconds out of the tenth position.
Senior
Ty McDaniel made his mark in the hammer throw for UT Tyler. McDaniel launched the weight a distance of 15.99 meters on his final throw of the event. That mark solidified a sixth place finish and his longest throw of the indoor season thus far.
Alexander Asad and
Kalen Barlow each made their own impact in the men's 800 meters. Asad placed fifth with a time of 1:59.50 and Barlow finished in seventh with a time of 2:02.14. The time from Asad finishes just 6.58 seconds behind a school record for the Patriots.
UT Tyler will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. as they will compete in the Samford Open at the Birmingham Crossplex.
