A WILD WEDNESDAY

The University of Texas at Tyler women's soccer team answered a two-goal deficit twice to come away with a 4-4 tie against St. Edward's on Wednesday night. Junior Sydnee Garner set the tone for what would be the Lone Star Conference's highest scoring game so far in 2022 with a goal 45 seconds into the match. St. Edward's answered that early Patriot score with three unanswered goals, but couldn't put UT Tyler away as sophomore Faith Adje scored the equalizer in the 76th minute to help the Patriots keep pace in a tie for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings. St. Edward's tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth minute, and then added two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half to build what would end up being their first of two multi-goal advantages in the match. Junior Alexia Moreira cut the deficit to one with her second goal of the year in the 62nd minute, only to see the differential jump back up to two less than two minutes later with another St. Edward's goal to make it 4-2. The Patriots played what could up being their most meaningful 25 minutes of soccer from that point forward, and used goals from junior Maddie Higgins in the 71st minute, and the equalizer from Adje in the 76th minute to answer the second two-goal deficit with a pair of unanswered scores to close out the match at it's eventual 4-4 final.

WHAT COACH WEBB IS SAYING

On Jordan Colbert and the rest of the midfield's outstanding play as of late... "Jordan's been incredible this year. First of all she's been an amazing leader and has really stepped up and taken control of the leadership side of this team. As a player she has been dictating the way that we play in the midfield for every game, but I really feel like she has found her rhythm as of late. We've changed our shape just a little bit in the last couple of weeks and so the midfield is starting to figure each other out. Start to finish, I thought we were collectively really good in the middle part of the field."

On staying focused on the controllables over the next four matches... "We can't worry about the conference standings right now. We have to get better. We have St. Edward's at home who has historically been one of the top teams in this conference and then we have Midwestern State on the road who has historically been a great team in this conference so at the end of the day we have stuff that we have to take care of and get really dialed into our match-ups. The conference standings, you look at it and it's going to come down to the very last game and the very last point, but those aren't things that we can control. We just have to get better and get ready for Wednesday."

THE MATCH UP

Midwestern State is currently running out of opportunities in their quest for a berth in the LSC Women's Soccer Championships having totaled seven points so far in 2022 in league play. The Mustangs are 2-6-1 in conference play and 5-8-1 on the year, and have dropped three straight matches heading into their Saturday meeting with the Patriots. Midwestern State failed to scored in all three shutout losses at DBU, West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian, and rank eighth in the LSC on the season with 14 total goals scored. Brynn Covington leads Midwestern State with four goals and eight points on the year, while Olivia Okoye and Cassidy Savoy have both netted three goals throughout the season. History will be on the Mustang's side on Saturday as they hold an 0-3-1 advantage all-time. Midwestern State claimed a 2-1 overtime victory in the most recent meeting the two teams last October in Tyler. The Patriots are 0-1-1 in Wichita Falls having suffered a 2-1 defeat in their last appearance at Stang Park in the Spring of 2021 season.

THE FIRST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UT Tyler senior Jordan Colbert was named the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for her role in the team's 1-1 draws against Texas Woman's and Angelo State. Colbert becomes the first women's soccer representative from UT Tyler to earn a Player of the Week designation from the Lone Star Conference. The Allen, Texas native scored the lone Patriot goal in each contest to secure a vital point towards the Lone Star Conference standings in each match. Both goals came via penalty kicks for Colbert to notch her third and fourth goals of the 2022 season and provided UT Tyler the scoring they needed to pick up a result in both matches. Colbert provided the cross that led to the foul inside the Texas Woman's box on Wednesday, and helped lead a Patriot offense throughout the week that outshot their opposition by an 11-to-10 margin.
