A MATCH TO SET THE STAGE
The UT Tyler women's soccer team took a hit to their pursuit of one of seven spots in the 2022 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships with a 2-1 loss at Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon. UT Tyler couldn't hold onto a 1-0 halftime lead after two goals from Midwestern State less than two minutes apart in the 53rd and 55th minute secured the Mustangs a much-needed three points. Junior
Sydnee Garner scored her second goal in as many games in the 24th minute to pad that 1-0 advantage that eventually slipped away in the second half. UT Tyler remained in a tie for seventh place alongside UT Permian Basin in the LSC standings following the loss with 11 points, one point clear of Midwestern State, who now has 10 points. UT Permian Basin has just one match remaining in the regular season, while UT Tyler and Midwestern State will both play on Tuesday and Friday of this week.Â
WHAT COACH WEBB IS SAYING
On last week's results against St. Edward's and Midwestern State... "Wednesday against St. Edward's was probably one of the most exciting games we've had here. To go down twice by two goals and come back and tie 4-4, I think it took it's toll mentally on both us and St. Edward's if you look at the results for both of us on Saturday. It took everything we had in that game and so we came out not firing on Saturday and didn't have our best day. Credit to Midwestern State, they took it to us. We scored an unbelievable goal with
Sydnee Garner's goal, but we just couldn't sustain it. It was tough for us to find our rhythm late in the game on Saturday when we needed it most."
On the outstanding play of Sydnee Garner as of late... "You look at the team we had last fall compared to this fall and all of the returning players really committed to the spring development and just grew. Sydnee has always had the ability in her, she just had to have the belief that she could be a game changer. When she is on the ball she is just special. She just creates the game in so many different ways. We have so many pieces that are around her as well. In the attack we are just very dangerous, we just have to continue to clean up how we look in transition to be able to put it all together this week."
On the implications of the final week of the regular season... "We went on a long road trip to Midwestern State on Saturday and now we come back to play on a Tuesday, it's not going to help that we're expected to get a ton of rain this afternoon so the location of the field, the time of the game and the condition of the field all make for a really exciting game. Then we turn around and go on the road to Eastern New Mexico and it's a long trip, but we have to get the results. I think we've experienced everything that we can experience this year. We've shot ourselves in the foot and we've also played absolutely out of our minds, but now it's go time. There can't be anymore excuses, there can't be anymore reasons why we can't, we just have to go after teams and get some wins."
A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS
UT Tyler can assure themselves a spot in the 2022 LSC Women's Soccer Championships with wins in both matches this week against St. Mary's and Eastern New Mexico. A tie or a loss in either of those two matches could bring a host of teams into the mix for one of the seven spots available in the tournament. Midwestern State holds the biggest threat to jumping the Patriots into one of those spots as they hold the first tiebreaker after their win over UT Tyler on Saturday should both teams finish with the same amount of points in conference play at the end of the week. Midwestern State also has two opportunities to secure points as they play on Tuesday at Texas Woman's and on Friday at home against Angelo State. UT Permian Basin and Texas A&M International, who enter this week with 10 and nine points, each have just one match left in conference place. Texas Woman's would be a candidate to jump into the no. 7 spot should they win Tuesday's game against Midwestern State as they sit with eight points heading into what is going to be an interesting final week of the 2022 season.
