ONE MORE ROAD GAME
One final road trip for the 2022 regular season sees UT Tyler head south to San Antonio, Texas to take on #6 St. Mary's in a huge matchup with big Lone Star Conference implications for both sides. The Patriots need a result against the Rattlers to continue their hopes for an LSC Tournament appearance, while the Rattlers, who are number one in the LSC standings, need to avoid two straight losses in order to claim the regular season title.
LAST TIME OUT
UT Tyler caught fire over the last week, scoring a pair of 3-0 victories over Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M International. Against the Dustdevils, the scoring was opened by a highlight-reel finish by
Lukas Paulun from a corner kick, before
Craig Chisholm and
Sergio Sola posted goals of their own to earn a big three points for the Patriots.
WHAT COACH JONES IS SAYING
On the big wins from last week: "I thought the biggest difference was purely execution. Our preparation and the message we gave to the guys has been consistent. It was really good for the guys to get those wins."
On trying to get two wins this week: "Obviously it's tough to win on the road for most teams in this conference. We are going to be consistent in our message this week and really just focus a little bit more on the details that will help us and the details that helped us the last two wins."
On this year's senior class: "It's a special group. Just seeing those guys grow not just as soccer players but as people. Especially in the transition from Division III to Division II. I think the program is really sustainable and the guys have really been proof of that."
AROUND THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
After last week's slate of games, St. Mary's has opened up a six point lead over West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian and just has to have a result in one of their final two games to claim the conference title. DBU comes in at number four, and they are followed by UT Permian Basin and Midwestern State who are each tied at nine points and take up the final two spots in the LSC tournament. Oklahoma Christian sits one point back and UT Tyler sits two points back as they each have a chance to make the tournament.
THE SCENARIO
For the Patriots, it is a complicated scenario, but two wins this week would go a long way towards claiming one of the six Lone Star Conference Tournament spots. UT Permian Basin will face Midwestern State and Lubbock Christian this week, Midwestern State will face UT Permian Basin and West Texas A&M, and Oklahoma Christian will face West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico.
The Patriots will need two of those teams to slip up and also collect a win to jump into the tournament seeding on Wednesday night and lead to what could be yet another win-and-you're-in scenario with DBU on Saturday night.
SERIES HISTORY
UT Tyler and #6 St. Mary's have squared off seven times in their series history dating back to October 19, 2019. There have been spirited contests in this series, including the first ranked win of the Division II era for UT Tyler, a 1-0 win over then #16 ranked St. Mary's on March 30
th, 2021.
Most recently, the two teams battled in a defensive heavy contest back on September 14
th as they would draw by a score of 0-0 at Citizens 1
st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
SCOUTING OUT THE RATTLERS
The Rattlers are 10-0-5 on the year and have played tremendous defense against a tough schedule. They have allowed only four goals on the season, and of those four goals, none of them have come in the same game. Only one of those games led to a tie, a 1-1 affair on August 25
th against West Texas A&M.
Three different Rattlers are tied with three goals each, and six more have at least two goals. On the assist side, Deni Cresto leads the team with seven total assists, which leads the conference.
Johnny Clifford leads the Rattlers into battle and is in the midst of his fifth season. He has made the Lone Star Conference semifinals each of the last two seasons and went all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16 back in 2019 while also claiming the programs first Lone Star Conference championship.
NEXT UP FOR THE PATRIOTS
Following the Wednesday evening match against #6 St. Mary's, UT Tyler will return home for their final game of the regular season to host DBU. That will be the final game inside Citizens 1
st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex for several Patriots that have left a significant impact on the program and the Patriots will look to go out with a win.
