AN UNFORTUNATE RESULT
UT Tyler had two goals called back and couldn't manage to find the back of the net in their 17 shot attempts on the night to fall by a 1-0 margin to St. Mary's in their home finale on Tuesday night. A foul call on the opposing keeper and an offside call against the Patriots took two goals off the scoreboard for UT Tyler in what would be a tightly-contested match for the entirety of the 90 minutes of action. St. Mary's used a goal from their leading goal scorer on the year in Juni Ejere in the 32
nd minute to provide the difference in the match. The loss now sets up a must-win situation for UT Tyler after Midwestern State overtook the Patriots for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings with a win over Texas Woman's on Tuesday night. UT Tyler sits with 11 points, making for a must-win for the Patriots and a must-lose for Midwestern State at Angelo State if UT Tyler is to overtake Midwestern State for the seventh and final spot in the LSC Tournament.
WHAT COACH WEBB IS SAYING
On the implications of the final week of the regular season... "We turn around and go on the road to Eastern New Mexico and it's a long trip, but we have to get the result. I think we've experienced everything that we can experience this year. We've shot ourselves in the foot and we've also played absolutely out of our minds, but now it's go time. There can't be anymore excuses, there can't be anymore reasons why we can't, we just have to go after them and get a win."
THE MATCH UP
Eastern New Mexico will be playing the role of nothing more than spoilers on Friday afternoon having already been eliminated from contention for the LSC Postseason Tournament with a league record of 2-7-2. The Greyhounds have scored just three goals in LSC play, but snapped a three-match losing streak in their most recent outing with a 0-0 tie against Lubbock Christian. Keeper Samantha Jeffries leads the LSC with an average of 6.06 saves per game while Samantha Vasquez leads the Greyhounds with two goals scored on the year. The two sides went the full length of time last season in route to a 1-1 draw in the 2022 season finale. UT Tyler fell in the first meeting between the two sides back on Oct. 3rd, 2019 by a 2-1 final in Portales.
A SIMPLE SCENARIO
After what looked to be a developing race to the end for the seven spots in the LSC Women's Soccer Postseason Tournament, the final day of the 2022 regular season has provided a clear scenario for the seventh and final available spot in the tournament. UT Tyler must win over Eastern New Mexico, and Midwestern State must lose against Midwestern State for the Patriots to overtake the Mustangs for the seventh spot in the tournament. Any other combination of results between the two matches will ensure Midwestern State the seventh and final spot in the tournament set for Nov. 1-6.
