A LOOK BACK

Last year's Patriots stormed their way onto the Lone Star Conference scene with big wins and turning around a program that went from three wins over the previous two seasons combined to 19 victories and just missing on an NCAA South Central Regional Tournament berth.

Head coach Rebecca Alvidrez engineered a revamped roster that shined on defense and offense as they took down #4 Texas A&M-Commerce on the road back on January 18th and then won two games in the Lone Star Conference Tournament over Midwestern State and Texas Woman's before falling to those same Lions in the semifinals.

A NEW YEAR

Building off of last year's success starts with the return of several core players from last year's team. Destini Whitehead, Montse Gutierrez, Lovisa Hevinder and Tina Machalova all return as key contributors as they each combined to miss just one game between the four of them in the 2021-2022 season.

Several transfers will look to make an impact as All-LSC Second Teamer Frances King transfers from Midwestern State to join the program, and she is joined by Division I transfers Victoria Ikenasio, Meagan Mendazona, and Franzi Prinz as well as junior college transfer Ella Bradley.

Those transfers will join incoming freshmen Emma Lundgren, Mariah Neal, Daria Clet, and Madyson Tate as the Patriots look to soar to new heights in the 2022-2023 year.

WHAT COACH ALVIDREZ IS SAYING

On beginning a new season: "I think our girls are excited to play someone new rather than battling it out every day in practice. We are going to be tested, CSU-Pueblo made the NCAA Tournament last year and Colorado Christian will be much improved."

On balancing the returners and newcomers: "The returners are setting the foundation behind the scenes to show the new kids what our standards are. It's just like any other program, we start fresh, it's a new year and a new set of goals and a new commitment. They are working hard every day and that helps."

On moving into her second year at UT Tyler: "We wanted to make sure over the summer that our recruiting class hit areas that we felt we needed to hit and I believe that we did that. Now is just every day continuing to build that chemistry and finding roles for everyone to fit in."

THE SCOUTING REPORT

The Patriots have never faced off against the Thunderwolves or Cougars and it marks just the second and third times that the Patriots have ever faced an RMAC opponent after taking on Westminster College on November 9th, 2019.

CSU Pueblo ranked as the number five team in all of Division II in blocked shots last season and ranked 17th overall in field goal percentage defense. Additionally, they ranked 23rd in scoring defense and 12th in steals. The Thunderwolves finished the season at 23-9 and earned a trip to the NCAA South Central Regional as the six seed before falling to Lubbock Christian.

Colorado Christian ranked 59th in Division II in offensive rebounds per game and also ranked 70th in free throw attempts. The Cougars additionally ranked in the top five of the RMAC in assists per game, averaging 13.4. The Cougars went 9-18 last season in the first year of head coach Diane Thompson's tenure.

PRESEASON POLL

The Patriots were ranked number five in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll. Last year's conference champion West Texas A&M claimed the top spot, followed by Lubbock Christian. Texas Woman's claimed the third spot and was followed by Angelo State and UT Tyler to round out the top five.
