A QUICK RECAP
The Patriots have made it back to the United States after a whirlwind trip to Puerto Rico where they took on a trio of Division II opponents. Against P.R.-Mayaguez, UT Tyler had their highest offensive output of the three games, scoring 84 points and holding the Janes to just 50.
On Wednesday against P.R.-Bayamon, the Patriots held the Cowgirls to just 47 points in a dominant defensive display. Their trip was wrapped up on Thursday against P.R.-Rio Piedras in an 83-57 victory.
STRONG DEFENSE
So far through five games the Patriots sit at 4-1, and that is thanks in large part to a defense that has arguably been the best part of the team. UT Tyler is holding opponents to 54.6 points per game this season and are allowing teams to shoot just 34.2% from the floor and 30.4% from beyond the arc.
In the 2021-2022 season, the Patriots started the same way through five games, but extended their record out to 8-1 before taking their second loss of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Patriots will face off against Southern Arkansas and Henderson State for just the second time each in their program histories. Last season the Patriots squared off with Henderson State and dropped a tight battle by a score of 73-65. Four days after that contest with the Reddies, the Patriots faced Southern Arkansas and won a 78-72 affair after coming back from a 21-6 first quarter deficit.
SCOUTING OUT THE MULERIDERS AND THE REDDIES
These two matchups will mark the final two non-Lone Star Conference opponents of the season for UT Tyler.
So far, Southern Arkansas is 2-1 on the season and have had their offense clicking on all cylinders. The Muleriders are scoring 92.7 points per game and are shooting 40.8% from the floor. A big chunk of their offense comes from beyond the arc, and there they shoot 37.5% as a team. They have four ladies in double figures this season, led by Kylie Warren, who is averaging 13 points per game on 48% shooting and 38.5% shooting from three.
Head coach Adam Collins enters his fifth season as head coach and has made the GAC Tournament twice. Last season, Collins led the Muleriders to a 13-15 record and an 8-14 conference record.
Henderson State will head into the matchup at a record of 2-2. After dropping their first two games, the Reddies are now on a two game winning streak, including a win over UAFS on November 19. The Reddies are scoring 64 points per game on 32.7% shooting and are at 32.4% from beyond the arc. The Reddies have two players in double figures, but are led by Ashley Farrar who is averaging 21 points on 43.9% shooting and 50% from beyond the three point line.
The Reddies are led by head coach Jill Thomas, who enters her 10
th season at the helm. She holds a career record of 187-163 in her 14 total seasons. In her time at Henderson State, Thomas has led the program to the GAC Tournament eight times and has made the semifinals of that tournament three separate times.
NEXT ON THE SLATE
The Patriots will next return home to Tyler and host their first games of the season inside the Herrington Patriot Center. On November 30, UT Tyler will host Cameron for their first home game and first Lone Star Conference game of the season in what also will be Veteran's Appreciation Day. On December 2, the Patriots host Midwestern State for their second home contest of the year.
