INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The University of Texas at Tyler men's basketball team slid down a spot in the second edition of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings following the governing body's announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
The top eight schools in the South Central Region will compromise the regional tournament bracket set for March 12-15 at the top seed's host site. The winners of the Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference will receive automatic bids into the tournament field, while the last six spots will be filled with at-large selections.
The 64-team field for the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship will be made via an online selection show on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 6
th at 10:30 p.m. CST.
The Patriots came in at the no. 8 spot in the regional advisory committee's first rankings last week, but moved back a spot after a 1-1 week last week with a win over St. Mary's and a loss to St. Edward's. The second edition of the rankings are based on games through Feb. 20
th.
UT Tyler is one of seven Lone Star Conference teams to appear in the second top 10 rankings of the regional rankings, in what is the second of three rankings released by the committee prior to the announcement of the national tournament field on March 6
th.
The LSC occupied the first three spots in the second edition of the rankings, as Lubbock Christian (no. 1), West Texas A&M (no. 2) and Dallas Baptist (no. 3) sit in the no. 1-through-no. 3 spots in the rankings. Colorado Mesa moved into the no. 4 spot, while Texas A&M-Commerce slipped back into the no. 5 slot.
Black Hills State (no. 6), Angelo State (no. 7) and St. Edward's (no. 8) round out the spots ahead of the Patriots.
UT Tyler has two games remaining on the regular season schedule prior to the 2022 LSC Men's Basketball Postseason Tournament scheduled for March 1
st through the 6
th. The opening round games of that tournament between the no. 5-12 seeds are scheduled for March 1
st at the top seed's host site, while the no. 1-4 seeds will receive a first-round bye into the quarterfinals set for March 3
rd at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of that tournament will all take place in Frisco at the Comerica Center on March 3
rd, 5
th and 6
th.
The Patriots will wrap up regular season play this weekend with road meetings against UT Permian Basin on Thursday night and Angelo State on Saturday afternoon.
