Perez Breaks School RBI Record and Goff Tosses One-Hitter in 2-0 and 13-0 Wins Over UT Permian Basin

Senior Ashley Perez recorded the 194th RBI of her career and Tatum Goff held a no-hitter into the final frame as UT Tyler shutout UT Permian Basin in their conference home opener on Saturday afternoon

TYLER, TEXAS – Starters Payton Foster and Tatum Goff shutout UT Permian Basin and senior Ashley Perez broke the UT Tyler school record for career RBI with the 194th of her career in game two to highlight 2-0 and 13-0 wins over the Falcons on Saturday afternoon.

Foster and Goff allowed just four hits on the afternoon and Perez totaled six RBI on her three hits to help move #1 UT Tyler to 19-1 on the year and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots used timely doubles from Perez and sophomore Courtney Plocheck and an outstanding effort from Foster in the circle in game one, and then exploded offensively for 10 hits to run-rule UT Permian Basin in five innings in the 13-0 game two victory.

Perez broke the UT Tyler softball career record for RBI with the 194th of her career on a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning of game number two. That mark eclipsed the previous record of 193 previously held by current Associate Head Coach Whitney Wyly, who competed for the Patriots from 2009-11.

Foster stranded three base runners in the first three frames of game number one, before settling in to allow just three additional Falcons on base in the final 4.0 innings of her complete game effort. The Lufkin, Texas native moved to 10-1 on the year and allowed just three hits in the contest while striking out five along the way.

UT Tyler broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a two-out double by Plocheck that scored sophomore Amanda Marek from first. That 1-0 scoring margin held through the fourth inning and into a fifth inning that saw Perez double the lead with an RBI double of her own, scoring freshman Maddie Melton.

The Patriots left the bases loaded in that frame, but didn't need anymore offense in the contest as Foster cruised through the sixth and seventh innings to give UT Tyler the 2-0 win. The six UT Tyler hits came off the bats of six different batters, while Perez and Plocheck were each credited with an RBI.

It took one trip to the plate for the Patriot offense to get going in game number two, as they struck for seven runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. Perez got the scoring going with an RBI single that scored senior Bayli Simon for the second of her six RBI on the day.

Sophomore Hanna Fradkin came around to score in the ensuing at bat on a wild pitch, before back-to-back hits from Plocheck and Goff made it 4-0 in favor of the Patriots. Senior Shannon Klaus kept the rally going with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded before Simon plated a pair of runners to complete the 7-0 opening trip to the plate for UT Tyler.

Goff then went to work in the circle for the Patriots, and didn't allow a single hit until the top of the fifth inning with two outs, finishing the afternoon with three strikeouts and just the single hit.

The Rusk, Texas native joined in on the offensive explosion for the Patriots in the bottom of the third, hitting one of two homers for the Patriots in the frame alongside Perez. Perez's fifth homer of the season came with the bases loaded, giving the senior her record 194th RBI in the process.

Goff's homer to left center made it 13-0 later in the inning on a two-run blast that secured the sixth run of the frame for the Patriots.

UT Tyler scored their 13 runs needed for the run-rule off of just 10 hits, and had four representatives post multi-hit efforts in the game. Goff, Perez, Plocheck and Simon all finished their afternoon's with three hits between the two wins, while Goff posted three RBI on the afternoon to go along with her stellar work in the circle in game two.

The Patriots stayed in a four-way tie for second place in the LSC standings upon completion of play for the day across the league with a record of 5-1 in league play.

UT Tyler will get ready for a quick turnaround, as they are set to welcome Western New Mexico to Suddenlink Field tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for doubleheader action.
