A LOOK BACK

Wednesday's contest against #21 St. Mary's was billed as a tough matchup, and it lived up to all expectations as the teams battled closely to a 0-0 tie. The Patriots were outshot for the first time all season, but both teams matched each other in shots on goal at 5-5.

In the contest itself, Mathias Eriksen made a big statement, stopping all five shots on goal and pitching yet another shutout. Through five games this season, Eriksen has allowed just one goal while making 13 total saves.

It was yet another strong showing in the second half for UT Tyler, as they continue to push the tempo in the final 45 minutes. The Patriots outshot the Rattlers 8-6 in the second half and allowed just two shots over the final 20 minutes of the contest on defense. Of those eight shots, four of those went on goal for UT Tyler.

STRONG SHOWING FROM THE DEFENSE

UT Tyler continues to put out tremendous efforts on defense, and through five games they lead the nation in goals against average at just .200. Only one goal has hit the net against the Patriots so far this season, as Eriksen and the Patriots back line have built a brick wall.

As a team, the UT Tyler save percentage sits at .938, which is good enough to be second in all of Division II. Eriksen alone is at .929, which is the fourth highest mark in all of Division II. The Patriots sit at second in the country in shutout percentage, right at .800 for the year.

HISTORY AGAINST THE FALCONS

Between UT Permian Basin and UT Tyler, the two programs have faced off just four times in their series history, and all four of those contests have come since 2019. The all-time record sits at 2-1-1, with the Patriots holding the slim advantage.

In those contests, the first three games were played in Odessa, Texas, and the most recent edition was the first played in Tyler. In that game in Tyler, Sergio Sola had the one goal of the contest in one of the most tightly contested games of the year. That goal came with just 13 seconds left in the game as Sola snuck in a goal just inside the right post for the game winner.

THE FALCONS IN 2022

So far during the 2022 season, the Falcons are 1-0-2 through just three games. Their lone victory came against Adams State by a 5-1 margin. Both of their ties came against Fort Lewis and Texas A&M International.

On the statistics side, the Falcons rank in the top five in the Lone Star Conference in assists per game (2.33), goal differential (4), points per game (6.33), and team goals against average (.667). The team is averaging 16.3 shots per game, with an average of 4.67 of those going on goal.

UT Permian Basin has been well balanced in the goal scoring category, with five different Falcons entering the scoring sheet. Of those goal scorers, Gustavo Barroso leads the way with two goals. Barroso is also tied with Sergio Gonzalez for the most assists with two.

The Falcons are led by interim head coach Victor Domingues. Domingues is in his third year on the staff and helped lead the program to their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference tournament in 2021. Before joining the Falcons, Domingues served as an assistant coach at Defiance College where he helped the team post their best conference record in program history.

NEXT ON THE SLATE

Next week will see UT Tyler play Texas A&M International in their final non-conference game of the season. That game will also be the second road trip of the season for UT Tyler as they will have played five of the first six matches inside Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

Following that contest, the Patriots get a 10 day break before taking on UT Permian Basin again, but this time it will double as the opening game of their Lone Star Conference slate.
