LAST TIME OUT
Last week saw the Patriots cap off a 0-1-1 week as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Oklahoma Christian and used some dramatics to pull off a bigtime 2-2 result to West Texas A&M. Against the Eagles, the Patriots suffered their first home defeat of the season, but against the Buffs the Patriots battled right back with a late second half goal to earn a huge 2-2 draw and a critical point.
WHAT COACH JONES IS SAYING
On last week's games: "We're getting to the point where the results really matter. We're trying to get into a rhythm but at the same time everyone is getting more competitive, the benches are getting shorter. There's been a lot more ties than wins and losses recently in the conference. We just need to be a little bit more consistent on both sides of the ball."
On the message to the team with three games left: "If you look at the standings, there's two points that separate third and fourth and seventh and eighth. It's about us really executing. It won't be about talent, what will matter is are we executing at the right time."
On this week's matchups: "For us it's business as usual. Just checking in with the guys today to make sure we are physically and mentally okay. We just need to again stay consistent with the message and have the guys running on all cylinders as best they can at this part of the year."
IT'S ALL TO PLAY FOR
As it currently stands in the Lone Star Conference standings, Midwestern State is just a win away from clinching the regular season title. However, behind them things get considerably more cloudy. West Texas A&M sits in a comfortable second with 11 points and a three point lead on third. Eastern New Mexico and Oklahoma Christian each have eight points, while St. Mary's and Texas A&M International each have seven. UT Tyler and DBU have each posted six, but currently sit one point outside of qualification into the Lone Star Conference tournament.
Only the top six schools will get into the tournament, with six different tiebreakers available in the event of a tie for seeding. Those tiebreakers are head to head competition, goal differential in conference games (limit +/- 4), record against conference opponents in descending order starting with the highest seeded team, goals against in conference games, goals scored in conference games (limit +/- 4),, and a coin flip.
