A SUCCESSFUL 2022 CAMPAIGN
UT Tyler made the most of their first full-fledged season of NCAA Division II membership, finishing as NCAA Division II National Semifinalists at the 2022 NCAA Division II World Series in Denver, Colo. last spring. The Patriots finished the year with a 49-9 overall record, claimed the South Central Regional Championship and defended their Lone Star Conference Regular Season Championship with a 26-4 record in LSC play. UT Tyler held the no. 1 spot in 13 out of the 14 regular season NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches polls in 2022, and unanimously sat atop the poll in eight of those weeks. The Patriots finished the year no. 3 in the final NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Polls, and had a pair of players named to respective All-American teams in
Ashley Perez and
Tatum Goff. Head coach
Mike Reed and his staff were named the NFCA Division II South Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season as well.
WHAT COACH REED IS SAYING
On the excitement built around a tremendous 2022 season... "We're really proud of that group and to see some of the players that stuck around to be apart of that be awarded with such a special season it was certainly something special. We want to build on each year here, and for each group to leave it better than they found it, so I thought last year was a big step forward to help us in our first year in Division II."
On what the program needs to do in order to maintain the success and expectations that have followed... "To win any conference in back-to-back years, it's tough to do, and when it's the Lone Star Conference that makes that task even more impressive. I think we have to grow and evolve, because I think everyone in our conference is doing the same. It's one of those leagues that you have to play well every weekend because I think top-to-bottom the league has improved, and we have to continue to do that. I think that's something that we're really proud of is that the program over the span of the years that we've had it hasn't gotten complaisant. If you look at the success of the program over the time that we've had it, it hasn't been one group of pitchers or one group of hitters, so I think that the players that are in that position now and in charge of the team, feel that responsibility to the past and understand that you have to continue to work hard and improve."
On the outlook for the 2023 team... "I think we have a really good mix, we're about 50/50 returners and newcomers. I think we did lose a big group, but going back to the success our program has had, if you're recruiting well and you get to senior day you're upset and sad because you're losing people that have made major contributions. I think with the names of the people we know coming back,
Tatum Goff-
Courtney Plocheck, there's also a group that have been waiting and developing already on the roster that are more than ready for their opportunity. To see that group through the fall get those opportunities for everyday reps and be the ones that we're looking at, you can see their confidence grow with the opportunity. And we're going to need some of the new faces to step in and fill the gaps and take over the responsibilities that we lost, not only on the field from a statistical standpoint, but from a leadership standpoint as well to hold the standard for our program."
PRESEASON NO. 3
The University of Texas at Tyler softball program has been picked no. 3 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll . The Patriots earned 370 total votes, nine votes shy of no. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills and 30 votes behind unanimous no. 1 and defending NCAA Division II National Champions Rogers State. The 2023 NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. The poll will be released each Tuesday at noon ET with the first regular-season poll announced on Feb. 14. The Lone Star Conference (LSC) and MIAA each landed two teams in the top 10 with the LSC topping all conferences with four nationally-ranked programs (No. 3 UT Tyler, No. 6 A&M-Kingsville, No. 18 Angelo State & No. 21 Lubbock Christian).
