A SHUTOUT WEEKEND

UT Tyler defeated Midwestern State in all three contests over the weekend at Irwin Ballpark to move to 28-4 on the year and 16-2 in Lone Star Conference play. Junior Tatum Goff struckout 12 and pitched her second career no-hitter to help #4 UT Tyler to an 8-0 win over Midwestern State on Friday night in game one. Goff struckout eight of the first nine batters she faced and carried a perfect game into the top of the fifth before the lone batter of the day for the Mustangs reached on a hit by pitch. Sophomore Sam Schott put the run-rule into effect in the previous frame with a two-out grand slam that highlighted a Patriot offense that produced extra-base hits on three of their seven hits for the ball game. The Rusk, Texas native finished her outing with 12 strikeouts in her 16 batters faced to move to a perfect 17-0 on the year. Junior Courtney Plocheck went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI triple, while Schott posted four RBI on the grand slam and added a pair of runs scored.finished off a shutout sweep of Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon with 11-0 and 7-0 victories over the Mustangs. Graduate student Shea O'Leary tossed a one-hitter in the 11-0 game one victory, striking out 10 Mustang batters while allowing just a pair of baserunners in the ballgame. Three hits from JT Smith and continued quality work in the circle from Tatum Goff and Kaylee Davis capped off the sweep with a 7-0 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Patriots outscored Midwestern State by a 26-0 total in the three games to move to 28-4 on the year and a perfect 14-0 at Irwin Ballpark. UT Tyler sits atop the Lone Star Conference regular season standings with a record of 16-2, a pair of games clear of second place West Texas A&M.

AN IMPORTANT WEEK

UT Tyler will take on an important week of softball on the road against Texas Woman's and at home this weekend against Oklahoma Christian. The Patriots trip to Texas Woman's on Tuesday and Wednesday will provide a stiff road test against a much-improved Pioneer club. The Pioneers sit 16-14 on the year and 10-11 under first-year head coach Gay McNutt. Most of the Pioneers improvement can be attributted to the addition of junior Alysaa LeBlanc, who followed coach McNutt from Texas A&M-Commerce and leads Texas Woman's in both batting average (.391) and ERA (1.73). LeBlanc leads the Lone Star Conference in strikeouts in the circle with 158 in just 97.0 innings, and has produced nearly half of the RBI for the Pioneers with 32. Texas Woman's is in the mix for one of ten available spots in the Lone Star Conference Softball Championship at season's end, and will undoubetly put their best foot forward on their home field against UT Tyler.

ANOTHER WEEK AT NO. 4

The University of Texas at Tyler softball program remained at no. 4 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll for the third consecutive week as announced by the organization last weekend. The Patriots received 352 votes once again despite a change at the top of the national poll as North Georgia took over the no. 1 spot on the heels of a 23-game winning streak. Rogers State, who was the unanimous no. 1 choice in each of the previous five regular season polls, slipped to no. 2, while Tampa, UT Tyler and Cal State San Marcos stayed in the no. 2-through-no. 5 spots. The 2023 NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
