A 3-0 WEEKEND
UT Tyler swept #22 West Texas A&M over the weekend to jump back into the top spot of the Lone Star Conference Regular Season standings. #4 UT Tyler won both ballgames in 5-2 and 6-5 fashion to hand #22 West Texas A&M their first two losses of the 2023 season on Friday night. The Patriots scored five runs off nine hits in game one and then plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth in game two to negate a 5-3 lead in favor of West Texas A&M to secure wins on a late night of softball in Tyler. The Patriots provided key heads-up baserunning throughout the evening to take advantage of some fielding mistakes by the Lady Buffs to jump ahead 2-0 in the series.
Courtney Plocheck and
JT Smith totaled a combined four extra-base hits to help #4 UT Tyler complete the series sweep over #22 West Texas A&M with a 6-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Plocheck and Smith drove in five UT Tyler runs on four of the five UT Tyler extra-base hits in the game to help the Patriots remain largely in control of a spirited series finale between both teams. Plocheck went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, while Smith matched that output with a 2-for-3 effort that featured a double and a two-run homer in the bottom of the third. Starter
Tatum Goff and relief pitcher
Shea O'Leary kept the Lady Buff offense largely in check once again, allowing just a single earned run on a solo homerun in the top of the fifth. Goff moved to a perfect 12-0 on the year with the win after tossing 5.0 complete innings, scattering four hits and striking out three along the way.
BACK ON TOP
The wins slid UT Tyler back into first place in the regular season standings with a league mark of 10-2 on the year and hold the conference winning percentage edge over #25 St. Mary's, who sit 7-2 in LSC play. The Patriots are now 8-3 this season against teams associated with the NFCA Division II Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, and are a perfect 11-0 on their home field at Irwin Ballpark.
A BIG WEEK FOR GOFF
Junior
Tatum Goff went 3-0 last week with a pair of complete game efforts to help #4 UT Tyler to five wins throughout the week. Goff allowed just a single earned run in 19.0 innings pitched, and struckout 13 batters along the way. She tossed a one-hitter on Tuesday against Southeastern Oklahoma State, striking out seven in her 7.0 complete innings of work. Goff then returned to the circle twice in the weekend series against #22 West Texas A&M, collecting wins in both outings against a Lady Buff club that entered the weekend ranked second on the year in team batting average. The Rusk, Texas native limited that offense to just a single earned run in 12.0 innings of work between the two starts, and conceded just nine hits along the way. Goff is a perfect 12-0 on the year in 2023, and has posted a 1.06 ERA in 79.0 innings this season.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
UT Permian Basin sits 4-13 on the year and 1-8 in Lone Star Conference play entering Tuesday's meeting. The Falcons will have the benefit of a lengthy rest heading into the series, as their most recent action came back on Feb. 25-26 against West Texas A&M. The Falcons rank 12th in the LSC with a team batting average of .228, and 15th in the LSC with a team ERA of 9.26. UT Tyler has won all five previous match ups between the two programs, and have shutout the Falcons in each of their last three meetings.
